Nurse After Mammogram or Pump and Dump?

Hi Mamas! A friend needed to have a mammogram while still nursing and received conflicting information on whether she can pump and use that breast milk or pump and dump for a certain period of time. If she must pump and dump, how long until it is safe to use her milk again? Any advice would be appreciated.

What can I do next?

I nursed after having a mammogram and it was no problem. She should make sure that the techs know that she is nursing before they do the mammogram, though. Some milk my squeeze out during the procedure -- totally normal for a nursing mother but not for anyone else. Also, she should probably take her pump with her and pump right before the mammogram -- that's what I was instructed to do. It will make it more comfortable for her and better for them to see what they need to see.

the radiation does not stay in the milk.. it goes through the womans body and the milk and itis gone.. I believe a mamogram uses less radiation than a chest xray.

she can continue nursing.

You don't need to pump and dump[ for a mammo - only if you get an MRI or other test WITH CONTRAST, meaning something injected into you like a dye.
However, it is best to pump just before getting the mammo done, to have the breasts as empty as possible - less discomfort or leakage, no dumping needed.

I've never had a mammogram or anything, but from what my mom has described to me, all they do is basically squish your boobs and take a picture, right? So how would that affect your breast milk? I don't think that it would. I think it might be a little uncomfortable at first (I can't imagine it feeling good to nurse after getting your boob squished), but I can't see how it's unsafe. I would just continue nursing. But that's juse me.

From kellymom about using radioisotopies. Looks like she is just fine to continue nursing after her mammogram.
I hope everything is ok. I had a breast biopsy done last year and it was scary, the unknown. Thankfully everything turned out ok. Good luck to your friend!
