Hi ladies,
I am breastfeeding my just turned two months infant and I am worried that he has not poop for 3 days. Is that normal? I remember that at the beginning I could not get him to stop pooping. Are there some things I can do to help him.

What can I do next?

Perfectly normal. Breastfed babies usually poop more than formula fed, but three days is fine. As long as he is eating ok, acting normally and has >5 wet diapers a day I would not worry about it. He could be stopped up as long as 2wks before some docs get really worried about it.

Hi - I know that it is not uncommon for breastfed babies to go several days, up to a week without pooping. I've had several friends go through the same thing with their little ones. Has he been nursing at his regular intervals? Have you noticed anything else going on with him? I have a 4 1/2 month old breastfed boy and after 4-5 days I think I'd still call the doctor, perhaps at 4 days, just so they are aware and in case there is anything else in your son's history that would have them concerned about his situation.

two of my boys had the same. 3 days is nothing! One went for 15 days without poop, the other 11 days. If exl.breastfed it is really not a problem (as long as they seem happy). You can try to eat a lot of grapes yourself.

Good luck, and don't worry

Perfectly normal!! My first son consistantly had 7-10 day inbetween poops until he started solids at 4 months. At first I panicked, but after my dr's reassurance, learned to accept it and enjoy the lack of dirty diapers. My dr told me that they digest breast milk so efficiently there just isn't much waste.

As long as your son seems comfortable, don't worry about it!! Enjoy your temporary break from daily poops, they will return!!

I'm not an expert on this topic since I was not able to feed like I'd liked with my daughter but I had every intention and desire so... Remember what you eat is what that sweet baby eats, therefore, things that might stop anyone up like cheese could be the culpret. If you eat lots of fruits and drink lots of apple juice and things that would normally help a baby poop, maybe that would help here.

As always consult your doctor, they will know best! If you think the baby needs to poop and can't, there's tons of ways to help with that! Ask the doctor if you can give the baby juice yet. It might be way too early but ask. If so, you might have to try several different types (each baby is different in what/how different things effect their bodies) but... Apple, grape, prune, juices tend to help them be able to poop. My daughter is a poop once a day gal and always has been. So when she hadn't pooped in a day I (even still) have to load up on fruits and juice to help.

The not so fun option if she needs to poop is a... (can't remember the name right now) its a wax little cone that you are able to insert and if need be, hold it in their bum. It does not hurt them at all, it may feel uncomfortable for them, and you will hate doing it but it allows them to push better. Typically the baby will poop as soon as you insert it. But it is a harmless wax that if nothing else will disolve and go away on its own.

Hope that helps, I know its not a technical or professional info but... :o) ~T.~

Hi P.! As far as what I've learned, your baby's infrequent pooping is within the normal range:

http://www.lalecheleague.org/FAQ/bm.html

My breastfed seven week-old daughter finally stopped pooping around the clock about a week ago! Her bowel movements have dramatically decreased as well. I wouldn't worry as long as your baby's having several wet diapers per day, is thriving, and otherwise seems happy and "normal".

It's totally normal for an exclusively breastfed baby to not have a BM for days. My second son went 7 days one time.

my infant went 2 weeks once and then had to have 'x-rays' done on her bowels to check on a 'backup'. No backup. It is normal. When he gets to eating solids feed him Activia yogurt, it helps my little one with her poop issues so much.

Try babies magic tea. It'll soothe your baby from constipation and other tummy bugs.

That is normal with breast-fed babies. My daughter went 15 days at one point. But watch out! when they poop - they poop A LOT!
