A.,
Pump more often. Drink water a little more often. Are you close to your period? Put your daughter to the breast, even if you feel empty.

Try pumping 10 min at a time, and spacing out the times instead of trying to get it all at once. (or 20 min or whatever. I don't know how long it took you to get 5-8 oz).

The more you remove, the more you make.

There's a lot more out there! Just relax and take it one step at a time. Stress does not help.

Good Luck!

I had a day or two like that, it happened to me on stressful day at work. The other time it was when my son was 8 months old and I got my period for the first time.
What can help is making sure you're drinking enough fluids and getting the rest you need. You might want to consider mother's milk tea to help boost your supply. Also making sure you are relaxed while pumping and taking deep breaths and focusing on your daughter or looking at her picture. If you have any back up frozen milk to help you get by this day or two that can also help. I hope this helps!

Dear mom, you are not drinking or eating enough, perhaps under alot of stress , either way its time to introduce REAL foods to your daughter, let today be the first day. so she isn't feeling hungry

Get in touch with a lactation specialist, you can find one through most local hospitals.

Are you remembering to drink enough water? I always had to remind myself of that when I was nursing.

HI.

First off, relax relax relax. YOur body won't pump well if you're tense.

Second, can you nurse her physically? Do you need to pump?

Always make sure you eat enough and drink enough.

The best way to increase production is to put the baby to the breast and nurse.

Go to your local health food store and buy a box of Traditional Medicinals Mother's Milk Tea. Yogi Tea also makes a tea for increasing milk supply. I know of many nursing mom's who have used this successfully. Drink 2-4 cups each day (make a pot of tea in the morning and drink throughout the day. use a mason jar if no tea pot). Also be sure to drink lots of water throughout the day. If you don't care for tea then look for fenugreek capsules. Blessed Thistle capsules is another good one. I prefer the tea because it increases your daily fluid intake. Don't stress about the milk. While you are nursing use visualization - close your eyes and visualize the milk flowing from your breast to the baby's mouth. Remember that you are strong and that you are doing the best you can to care for your baby. When you are not nursing take some time to sit quietly (maybe while you are drinking your tea) and visualize your body producing lots of nourishing milk. Good Luck!!

Hi A., its normail to run out of milk once in a while.. the key is to stay calm- don't stress... make sure you eat well and drink water.. especially have a good meal in the night before you sleep (or atleast eat a small snack right before going to bed) and have a meal before you pump first thing in the morning....

Having said that what helps me (i have a 8 month old) when i feel like im running out is drinking warm veggie soup ( i steam all the veggies in my fridge- beans, carrots, tomoatos, apple, cabbage, cauliflower, etc etc- and then just puree them with a hand mixer) - this almost always helps.

Also drinking warm milk helps... having nuts- almonds, kashew nuts, peanuts - also works ... in our culture they believe drinking warm liquids and having warm food helps produce more milk and quicker...

fenugreek seeds are also supposed to help but i dont have any experience with that..

Finally try keeping away from thinks that dehydrate you- coffee, tea, sodas, etc...

In most healthfood stores there are various products to assist in milk production; you may find these teas in your grocers store too. Mother's milk is one such name of a safe herbal tea.
