How long did your newborn start sleeping more than 1 or 2 hours during the night? When we first came home, he would sleep for 3 hours at the beginning of the night (midnightish till @ 3am) but now he's up every hour or so. He's only 2 1/2 weeks old, and I know I've got some time to put in before I get my sleep back, but I'm just curious about 0ther mom's experience. thanks :)

I am trying to remember...I think my son was up about every 3 hours or so, never more than that, but he was formula fed and we swaddled him which helped him sleep well. Do you swaddle? I highly recommend it. He started sleeping from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. when he was 2-3 months old, which felt amazing to me, and then was sleeping thru the night at 4 months old from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.. Hang in there, I know you must be so tired!!
Congratulations! :)

Does your baby want to drink each time he's waking up? If you're breastfeeding, it is normal for the baby to wake up frequently for food. Formula is more filling so they end up sleeping longer. I breast-fed for both my kids and for the first month, I conceded to their wishes and fed whenever they woke up at night. After one month, I began to apply a schedule for night feeding and let them cry a little longer each time. They both learned to sleep through the night pretty quickly after that. My daughter slept 4-5 hours by 6 weeks and my son learned in 7 weeks. They both learned to sleep through the entire night by the time they were 9-10 weeks old. Good luck to you and I hope you regain your sleep soon!

My kids did the same thing it is normal. Try to rest during the day as much as you can. One thing I did do was bathe at night verses in the morning. It relaxes them and also keeps them awake for a while during and after a bath. I tried to create a night time routine from when they were born. I was not expecting a consistent schedule at the age but I was creating a consistent routine for both of my kids. Children thrive on consistency so it did work for me. By 8 to 10 weeks they would sleep from 11-5 which was wonderful for me. Do you use a pacifier? I would try to use the pacifier to get them back to sleep before feeding every hour so they will feed more as the feedings are spread out. Sometimes they just need to suck and are not necessarily hungry. Good luck I hope you get some sleep soon.

Congratulations on your new addition.

My son was over a year old when he started sleeping through the night. Week 1, he was up every 2 hours. Week 2, he could make it to about 3 1/2 hours-ish more often than not. Even after getting to a year old there were times he would revert back to waking up at 3 am, to talk, eat, play and not necessarily in that order.

Best advice I have ever gotten is sleep while the baby is sleeping. For you with the two year old too, you just have to figure out how to balance it out. I'm all for the group nap.

Squeezing in some naps for yourself will help you be able to hang through the not sleeping at night phase.

I pray this information is helpful to you.

Your baby should be sleeping more than an hour or two during the night, no matter how old. Maybe he's hungry? Maybe its time to increase is formula intake at feedings or if your nursing, to nurse a couple minutes longer and dont let him fall asleep. And make sure he burps well before lying him down again.
Good luck

My son is 3 weeks old, and will sleep for a 4 hour stretch. I think your son is hungry or has some gas that he needs help passing. If you are nursing try to nurse longer. We are formula feeding and he takes 4oz. every four hours. At this point the baby should also stay awake for a short period after some of his feedings during the day. I also try to hold my son on my chest for at least 15 minutes after the feeding to make sure he will keep his feeding down and not spit up. If he falls asleep in the middle of a feeding, I will change his diaper to wake him up. Hope all of these tips help. I am a mother of 4 and this has worked with all of my children.

2-1/2 weeks is prime time for the first growth spurt and therefore increased need to nurse, assuming you are nursing.

Hey mom,

I always try to get my boys in a routine right away.

If your nursing, Don't turn on the lights at night, this way they don't get days and nights confused.

I always bring the baby in bed with me and nurse, and then return them to the bassinette afterwards,

If he cries I hold his hand and offer a pacifier.
but try not to lift him up unless its necessary.

Wrap him tight in a receiving blanket. this usually keeps them warm and secure.

Make sure your drinking enough fluids and eating right so your able to nurse longer and the baby feeds better.

I always do both breasts which ends up being about 4 oz pumped.

Also remember that Garlic and onion in foods passes thru the breast milk ( I always forgot this)

And then when you wake up in the morning wait 30 minutes before waking the baby,
this way you have a few minutes to get ready and spend time with your toddler getting him settled and having a little one on one time
and the baby gets in the habit of waking at a certain time.
extending his days. and tiring him out.

Last is try having them both nap at the same time.
