New Town, New Neighborhood

My husband and I just moved to a new town and new neighborhood. So far we've met two sets of neighbors that seem friendly. How do we go about getting to know other neighbors? Is it a good idea to ring doorbells and introduce ourselves? I am a SAHM and probably won't see people much during the week when people go to work. I would love to have a "meet-the-neigbhors" get together but I think it will take us a month to make our house look descent for visitors. Thank you for the advice.

P.S. I could probably check out my local church to meet people too.

What can I do next?

I would definitely do a meet the neighbors thing, and if it is still nice enough in your area, go out walking. We met SO many neighbors just by taking a nightly walk. Everyone goes out to water plants, mow the lawn, etc. Have fun getting to know everyone!

Some towns have a NEWCOMERS club, to welcome new residents.
They bring baskets of gifts/free samples, and info about local resources.
If there's a local Chamber of Commerce, ask there.
I don't think you should ring doorbells.
You might want to make a flyer --
something like we're new here.
We're a working-dad and SAHM with . . . . . 3-year-old, 2-year-old, etc.
We'd like to meet other . . . . . .
- parents of young children
- SAHMs
- local teens who might be babysitter candidates
etc.
And put the flyers in the doors of your close-by neighbors.
Good luck!!

I moved a lot too and I found the easiest way to meet people was when I picked up my children from school. We often stayed and they played in the playground while I chatted with some other moms.
I found that some moms are very social and they know everyone and they introduce you to others. If you happened to meet someone like that, stay close to that person in the beginning and you will meet tons of people in no time. I met two women who were like that and they really helped me meet others and find my way into some social circles. I was very grateful, since it is really not that easy to find new people.
We never went door to door in our neighborhood but some of the neighbors came to our door and most of them I met when I was working in the front yard.

The neighbors that really have the time to care that they have a new neighbor will be the ones that come and greet you. I wouldnt worry about it much. Time will take care of it.
