Neighbor's Cats Use Our Lawn & Garden for a Catbox!!!!

Please PLEASE does anyone know what substance I can put in my garden and lawn as a deterrant to cats!!! I can't stand animals crapping in my yard, since we don't have any my children shouldn't be stepping in it in our fenced in yard!
Dogs are a little easier to keep track of & to identify which dog belongs to which neighbor. I am thinking maybe the previous renter had cats & these are its friends??? I have no idea what I can do to get the cats out of here!

What can I do next?

Well, I guess you can spray them with the water hose if you see them and if you do it enough it will deter them. I think amonia will do it, too but I am not absolutely sure. I had heard of people putting it on their garbage to keep dogs from rumaging through it.

The cats are probably searching for mice and other yummy (to them) creatures.
People don't realize what a difference it makes until the cat(s) that are working at their residence are removed. I am just trying to present another way to look at your situation.

I would also be careful about what you "put out". Poison is poison. If it is not meant to be ingested, then it might be a poisonous substance to animals OR CHILDREN!

You can go online to pet supply places (Drs Foster and Smith, etc) and search for safe deterrents. There are sprays that help people train cats to stay off of furniture. I do not know how effective they would be outdoors.

Go to a pet store or on line and ask what products work. I don't remember what I used at our last base but I found some mix I sprinkled around our yard to keep our dog from digging under the fence to get to the neighbor's dog. I had to resprinkle after every rain. I do not have that problem here so I no longer have the product to give you a specific name. I bet there are a lot of choices out there. I also think I have heard that cats don't like moth balls and some people sprinkly those in their gardens to keep the animals away.

Hi,

I live in Germany so I don't know how England laws are concerning chemicals but I had a problem of animals peeing in our entrance area and I am like you, I don't have animals and don't like that other people's animals are using my place as a toilett. I went to the local hardwarestore/homeimporovement store (big chain here in Germany)in the garden section they had two different sprays. Unfortunatley you have to repeat the treatment over and over again with the chemicals as it gets washed down and might be a bit of a nuisance if you are sitting in the area as well if you don't like the smell.

Good Luck!

Hello J.,

Sorry to hear about the cats taking "potty breaks" in your yard!!
We had the same problems in Arkansas..We used Fresh coffee grounds to keep the animals away..

just use the coffee grounds after they have been ground, then spread them around the flower beds and garden..the scent is what keeps the cats away..:)

good luck!

There are a couple products you can try from Homebase and B&Q. I am sure the big Tescos or the Wilkinson's in Huntingdon might carry something as well. You can also ask at the Huntingdon garden centre (or any garden centre close to where you are- the staff should be able to assist). We had this problem a couple years ago at a previous house. The cats were even pooping on the back sidewalk (and the yard was totally fenced in). We were spraying the cats we caught with a super soaker water gun. We even found out who the cats belonged to but the owners could not care less as it wasn't happening in their yard. You might try amonia or even cayenne pepper (my grandad used to use this in his veggie garden to deter cats). Our previous landlords gave us a spray they bought and some type of powder (it was animal and child safe) that we had to reapply every time it rained (you know how much it rains here!!). Its been years since we used it so I can't remember the name.
Good luck and let us all know if you find a product that works.

Hi J.,

We have a cat and have daily "visitors" at our back door! And what my husband and I did, is put outside a cat box with litter in it for the "guests" to use. Yeah... I have another box to clean, but at least this way my kid can run around in the back yard w/out stepping on poop.

Good luck! ;-)
