Need Some Insight on Good OBGYN, Hospital, and Pediatrician
Hey mamas,
My husband has excepted a job in Sacramento and we will be moving there at the end of May. He will be working for Walgreens in North Sacramento. My questions are...I will be about 30 weeks pregnant by the time we move. This is really scary to me, because I am going to have to find a new doctor and build up some trust in less than 10 weeks. Also, I have to have a c-section, due to some complications that I had with my first child. We are going to Sacramento in March to look around, find a place to live, get some business in order, etc and I was hoping to be able to interview obgyn's, pediatricians, and tour a hospital. What are your recommendations as far as these areas? I don't know exactly where we will be living, but I assume pretty close to his work. Thanks so much for your help.

Ariana,
Great team of docs...
I see Dr. Ketchum...she's awesome!
###-###-####, she'affiliated with Sutter Hospitals (the best) and she's so in tune with her patients, she spends a great deal of time getting to know you!! I've only gone to her for 2 years, but she's been part of the group for years...I had to switch over to her after my doc had some medical issues that forced him into early retirement...truly sad, cause he was wonderful!!
Good luck, you'll like Sacramento, born and raised here, left for several years...but came back, it's home!!

sounds like you'll be in the Roseville/Rocklin area....I know there are great doctors up there...and I do believe the hospital up there is Sutter, with brand new facilities.....If you need more info and do not get anything here....you might try going to meetup.com and joining a mommy group in that area....and then get referrals from them.

Sutter Memorial Hospital is the leader in the delivery of babies department as well as having awesome staff. My OBGYN is Dr.Gail Shaw from Healthcare for Women. They are an all women practice, and they understand exactly what we go through. Very personable. Their offices are in the south area, so I don't know if that is a problem. Another good OBGYN is Dr. Jim Brodey. I believe he is the head of OBGYN at Sutter Memorial. Our pediatrician is Dr. Molley Baker, and she is actually a family practice doctor. I like that because they look beyond the one individual and at the entire family.
Good luck in your relocation. Sacramento is a great place to live and there are a lot of wonderful people.

If Kaiser is an option, I'd go that way. They just opened a brand new hospital in Roseville (about 20-25 min away) that is centered around their women and children's center, specializing in ob/delivery, etc. And with Kaiser, you can check out their dr's online and switch after a visit if you didn't click. Good luck!

Hi A.. If you have Kaiser insurance, I had a great experience with Kaiser South Sacramento. I can't give you the names of any specific doctors who practice there because mine doesn't, so I don't know any specifics...but it's a very nice facility to give birth in. Also, Kaiser has just opened their Roseville birth center, and I hear it's fabulous! I wish it had been open when I gave birth, since I live right near it! My OB-GYN (Heather Catich) is through Kaiser, and she practices in Lincoln and I think she now delivers babies in Roseville. Lincoln is kind of far from North Sac for you, though...probably a good 30-minute drive.
I would recommend staying away from Kaiser Morse Avenue if it's even still open. Before Roseville opened their birth center, Kaiser Morse was the hospital for anyone in the northern part of the valley (who had Kaiser), and it was just downright icky. In fact, my OB (who practiced there at the time I delivered my son) is the one who said, "Don't go there; drive down to South Sac. It's much nicer." However, I'm pretty sure Morse is now closed, so you're probably safe on that one.
I do know that for Kaiser, if you're having an elective C-section, you have to go to the hospital your OB practices at. So if you have Kaiser, make sure to pick an OB who practices at either Roseville or South Sac.
Good luck!
P.S. I'd avoid the UC Davis hospital in Sacramento. I'm sure many mamas have had good births there, but I've been told it's a "teaching" hospital, so it can be a little stressful giving birth in an environment where students are learning.

I personally have Kaiser for my health care so unless you are also planning to go through Kaiser I can't be very useful. However, if you do in fact get Kaiseri would highly recommend you choose you OB at Kaiser Elk Grove everyone there is amazing even the receptionists are caring. And the South Sac labor & delivery is very nice. I've had 3 beautiful babies there and they definitely made sure it was a pleasant experience.

Do you have Kaiser Insurance? If you have Kaiser there are several facilities. I am out of Elk Grove, so I see Dr. Jang. If you move to North Sac, that will be a bit of a drive. I was actually born at the Morse Ave Kaiser. I love Kaiser, everything you ever need is at one facility and there is never the run around or waiting for doctors to give you the recommendation for specialists. Just my two cents.
Also there are great Sutter Health groups in Your area. If you are Sutter, let me know and I will get some recommendations from my sister. Good Luck!

Hi again A.,
We live in North Natomas, probably near the Walgreens that your husband will be working at (I also recommended a real estate agent for you) anyhow, when I got pregnant I didn't have any doctors up here, so it was very scary! I got a lot of recomendations and ended up choosing to work with The Sutter Medical Group in Davis. Everyone always asks why Davis if you live in Sac? The reason being, from where we live in North Natomas it takes 25 mins to get to pretty much any of the hospitals in Sac. sometimes longer depending on the traffic. It takes 25 mins to get to Sutter Davis plus there are two different ways to get there so if it is a trafficy time we wouldn't be stuck with only taking 80. Anyhow, I absolutly loved my son's pediatrician, Kristin Friend. My OB was great also, Dr. Fineburg, but they also have a great team of midwives. I ended up delivering prematurely and had to have a C-Section as well. The nurses were great at Sutter Davis, we had a hard go of it, but they were all very helpful and reassuring. They have private rooms (they are small but still private). Unfortunatly I had to switch to Kaiser when my son was 6 months because I didn't return to work and so we had to join my husbands insurance plan which is Kaiser...still bummed about that and missing my original Dr.'s. Also if you need a general practicioner Heidi Henchell is wonderful! The great thing is they are all located in the same parking lot, the OB and Ped are right across the hall from each other.
