We just bought a house in brookhaven. My kids and I are in MD while the closing on the new house takes place. My number 1 priority was schools when choosing a house, yet my husband decided to make an offer on a house in brookhaven. I have asked around about schools in that town and have not gotten good feedback. But our deal is done. My DH's reasoning for choosing this house is, per his words, searched high and low in long island and for the price this was the best deal (his priorities were different: huge home, huge yard, newer home etc).
Now I need your help. My children are 4 years old. Does anyone know anything about schools in brookhaven (PRE-K, K etc). We will live there for years to come. What about private schools? Is the area dangerous, crime etc.
Please, anything you can tell me will be most appreciated.
EDIT: i realize i haven't specified where the house is located at. all i know is zip code is 11719, says area horizon, and school district south country.
All the best
L.

It really all depends on what part of Brookhaven you are in. Are you going to be south of South Country road or Montauk Hwy? Brookhaven is very pretty if you are south of South Country and you will have Bellport Village that is very nice also. The schools are not to bad until you get into High School and even then it's not terrible. If you need anyone to show you around the island and fill you in on the good places feel free to contact me at ____@____.com or if you have more ????'s let me know I will help in any way.

You didn't specify if you were in Brookhaven township or Brookhave the town. I live in Lake Ronkonkoma in brookhaven township & the school system is great here - no crime to speak of - the library is awesome. Let me know which town you are actually moving to, as there are great mom's groups & resources that I can point you too. We are in the Sachem school district, which school district is your house in? Sachem is really good. Generally schools in suffolk county are pretty good - no real need for private schools like in the city. Let me know which town & I can give you some advice.

do you mean town of brookhaven (which emcompasses lots of towns) or brookhaven near bellport, yaphank, etc.? there are tons of fabulous private schools in the area. also if you decide you aren't happy with the public school in the area, you are allowed to pay tuition for your children to go to a neighboring district. many of the public schools around here are better than some of the privates. good luck!

Hi L.,
I grew up in Bellport, and now I own a house in Patchogue (both are near Brookhaven). I went to the South Country School District, and I didn't think it was that bad. The students are quite diverse, because North Bellport has a lot of poor minority families, while Bellport Village has a lot of rich white families... and all the neighboring areas are mostly middle class - all different races. I hear bad stuff about South Country, but having gone there myself, I feel that a lot of it is just that it has a bad reputation. The district has 3 different elementary schools (Brookhaven, Verne Critz and Kreamer Street), your kids go to whatever school is closest. That is K - 3. I think Pre-K is available, but I'm not sure. Then the students from all 3 schools go to Frank P. Long School for 4th & 5th grade (yes, that is really the name!). Bellport Middle School is 6-8 and Bellport High School is 9 - 12. The only private schools that I know of in the area are Catholic Schools and I'm guessing that they can be a bit pricey. You mentioned "area horizon." I'm not positive, but I think that is a small community of big, beautiful homes (lucky you!).
Yes, there is some crime, but I think that most of it is contained to the North Bellport area. If I thought that our school district was really that terrible, I wouldn't have bought a house in the area. But I am planning on sending my children there.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions. I've lived here my whole life and I am familiar with the area. Best of luck to you!
