Need Advice on Digital Cameras!

My 2 year old Kodak digital camera is not working correctly... due to toddler throwing it down several times. We are looking for a new digital camera now. I would like one that is semi-compact, takes good video and pictures. The video for our digital had to have the perfect lighting so we hardly ever got videos on it because of that. I love to take video and share it online so one that I do not need to mess with the controls too much would be great. Price range really isn't an issue as it will be a Christmas gift from my parents who are willing to pay more than we would! I just want one that takes good video and pictures. :) Thank you!

What can I do next?

Fuji and Canon are good brands! Plus they include digital photography software and online tips/crafts.

Just a few notes. Zoom only counts if it is optical zoom. Digital zoom will cause your picture to have less megapixels and therefore lose quality. High megapixels make for great pictures but cause older model computers to have a hard time downloading or opening the pictures. Also higher megapixels take up more space on your hard drive and the memory cards. 5 megapixels are plenty for great looking pictures all the way up to 8x10. Roughly 10 megapixels will take professional looking pictures that will allow for alot of cropping and enlargements. Most people really have no real use for this. Stay away from memory cards bigger than 4 GB. They aren't advanced enough yet to work correctly and last. You don't want to load a card and then have it fail on you.
This is all I have.
Good Luck and God Bless

I completely understand the need to have video & stills in the same camera. I have had the Canon Power Shot S2 IS for a couple of years now. It has the best combination that I have found. It has a "super zoom", meaning that it has 12x optical zoom. The videos that it takes are great.
The one thing I would recommend looking into it seeing if they have anything with more megapixels. This one only has 5mp, but they've probably upgraded the model since.
I just recently got my first digital SLR, so the Canon now belongs to my husband. It's still going strong.
Good luck finding your perfect camera! The right camera can be like having a best friend!

Get a Nikon Digital D60. I have the D80 and it is great very professional shots even for the person who don't know how to use a camera. It is pricey but your photos will look super and it those precious moments that you have for a life time. You will not be disappointed. It even hold your shot steady.

I have a Canon Powershot that I've had for four years. It's small enough to fit in my back pocket, so I take it pretty much everywhere. It's a bit scratched up, but works just fine (and believe me - I'm h*** o* electronics). At a parade on Saturday, some friends pointed out that I was about to sit on my camera. . . it wouldn't be the first time, and surely not the last.

It takes pretty good pictures and videos (though, sometimes they come out blurred when I turn the flash off and don't hold still enough), and rates well on consumerreports.com.

Happy snapping!

I love my Sony Cybershot, it takes great pics, is very compact, starts up fast and the video is pretty good even in semi-low lighting. It has been dropped a couple of times and is still fine. This is our 3rd or 4th in my family (mom has had them too) and we upgrade every 3-4 years, as needed. They are at Circuit City for about $270 which is a steal!

Cannon. Any of them. I love mine. I too had one lost to an un-timely death due to my daughter and replaced it with yet another cannon. It has a kids and pets setting for th quick movers, the video with no complaints from anyone that watches them, and all diffrent types of features that I can swithch with one hand while I hold my daughter with the other. SIMPLE....SIMPLE! I love it

My husband and I bought the Sony HSC-10 last year for our Christmas present to each other. It is very compact (fits in my purse), it has 8.1 megapixels and has a 10x zoom internal lens. It has different portrait modes, video, and the capability to connect to a HDTV 1080p in order to have a slide show on your tv for whatever reason. We use it at birthday parties and holidays to portray all the pics of our daughter. Anyway, we LOVE this camera. We have blown our pics up to 11x13 and still see no pixels. My parents have a Canon DS6041 (DSL...wonderful but HUGE) and after seeing the pictures that my camera produces, are wanting to trade theirs in for my Sony. Anyway, I couldn't be happier! It connects easily to the computer with one USB that comes with the camera. We did purchase a 2GB memory card but we got that at Sam's Club for less than $100. Look into it. It is a wonderful camera!

I take a LOT of pictures and tend to be pretty rough on cameras. In the past four years I've been through a Nikon, Sony and Canon. A month ago my Canon died and that's what I'll be replacing it with. Of all these cameras the Canon powershot stole my heart. Great video, clear pics, quick response time, decent zoom. I also have a digital video camera and actually find myself using my Canon for video more often then my video recorder. I really like that it's small enough to go in my pocket, so I take it with me everywhere (which is not how it got broken!) One problem with the Canon though is that it has a tendency to get stuck with the telegraphing lens out and can be tricky to repair, that's how mine bit the dust, but all things considered I will definitely be getting another Canon.
