My Son and MATH

My mom was a math teacher. And we went through the same thing. I think it's a matter of teaching kids that sometimes there are things you have to do first before you can do the things you want to do. I know that it only took once of not getting to go to sports practice because my homework wasn't done. if it takes him all night then he's sitting at the table and not doing anything else. If he's doing it in the kitchen then you can still move about and get things done and still periodically check him.

Since he is nine, the sticker chart will work wonders with him, especially if the reward is worth it to him. I would suggest that if he gets his math homework done within like an hours time over 1 month, he can get something special, eat somewhere special or where he choices, or so on. I have to use this with my son as well because he has similar problems where Im pretty sure he is just bored. I give him money at the end of the week, like a $1. Then he can spend it when we go grocery shopping, or he can decide what he wants to buy and he saves up his money for it. He has other chores as well, so he gets some extra for them as well. Both of my sons hate math. I find it works better to give my son a quiet place to do his work and then I only check on him once or twice. I do flash card for both of them. One of them is on plus and minus and the oldest is on multiplication. It seams to help them do their work faster. Good Luck!!!!

Is there a way that math can be made more fun. Maybe get him involved with an activity that involves math. Like carpentry, starting his own kid business, mowing lawns, paper route, whatever. Of course with the encouragement that his school work is done.
