Ditto dvmmom... In addition if the bird came from a pet store it may have simply been ill-bred. They produce them by the masses with any sort if quality control.
Also, parakeets are very social birds. If you keep them alone they do tend to get "depressed" which can make them susceptible to disease.

Birds are notorious for hiding their illnesses until it's practically too late. It's a survival mechanism and just part of their instincts from living in the wild. So she may have been sick for a while before anything would have been noticed. I have very limited experience with birds, but in the absence of other signs (respiratory infection, etc.) in most often tends to be nutritional. Too many pet birds are fed all-seed diets which causes nutritional deficiencies, and eventually over time it catches up with them. Birds are better off on pelleted diets that are better balanced and contain all the nutrients they need in the proper amounts. Birds can also be very sensitive to cooking fumes from pots and pans on the stove (Teflon in particular), which is why we don't advise keep pet birds in the kitchen area.

This is a question for a veterinarian. We don't know your parakeet, we don't know his condition when he died, we don't know where you got this bird from. We are not trained animal medical professionals.

This is something to ask a vet, of course. Parakeets can live for as long as fifteen years. My daughter's parakeet didn't live half that long. As it turned out, we were not feeding him properly and didn't even know it. We thought all birds lived on bird seed. Turns out parakeets need a healthy diet of fruits and veggies. We felt very bad when we found out too late.

Parakeets can't take drafts. Are you using paint or strong smelling cleaners? They can't breath that. Did you give her grit or oyster shells to help digest her food? What type of seed did you give her? She may also be egg bound.
Grandma N. who takes in abandoned and abused birds.

my gma's vet told her that if your parakeet survives the 3rd year, then it's a healthy bird.

most other birds die from a tumor which basically causes them to starve to death....that's what happened to Granny's bird. It was so sad to watch, but at age 90....she just couldn't put the bird down. It was her last living friend....according to her. We tried & tried to get her to agree to ending his pain.

Condolences to you. Losing a pet is so heartbreaking....our beloved dog's life ended just a few weeks ago & I'm still boohoo'n over losing him. & will for some time....even with a new pup in the house. :(

I think you should ask a pet store.

But I had parakeets that died young. My brother gave them to me and told me to feed them every day, even if it did not look like they needed food because they eat the seeds and leave the shells and it looks like their bowl is full when in fact it's empty. So, silly me, did not heed his advice and their bowl looked full so I let is slip one too many times and they died of starvation on me. It was totally my fault and I have never owned a parakeet since.

I believe our cat scared our parakeets to death some years back. Do you have a cat?
It might have had a heart attack. Who knows.
