My Daughter Was Just Diagnosed with ODD, Anyone Else Have a Child with This???

My daughter just turned 3 back in April and has been having some major behavioral issues. She's been seeing a Guidence Councelor for the past year but, all her Coucelor does is just give me Handouts to read and bring over DVD's for me to watch on how to coupe with her behavior. My husband and I have tried all the suggestions on the hand outs given to us and nothing so far has worked. I was phyiscally getting beat up by my three year old and was in tears most of the time because I had no idea where this was coming from or why. My husband and I do not act like this in our home and we certainly don't watch anything volent with her up or present in the room. So I was more concerned on how to get this stopped. I was getting beat up in places like WalMart and other stroes and the embarrassment was so great that I feared taking her ANYWHERE with me. So a few weeks ago I noticed a few bruises on her leg and asked her how she had gotten them, she turns around and says her daddy did it, I know it was a lie because I've never seen her daddy hit her hard enough to ever leave bruises or marks of any kind on her. So then the next day I walk in and catch her hitting herself with a toy of hers on the leg, this was after I'd just sent her to her room for misbehaving. I've taken all the toys out of her room now that she can hurt herself with so we've eliminated that possibility. But when you ask her how she got a Boo Boo on her she'll go down a list of people, some that she doesn't even see everyday, she even blames the animals we have for her self injuries. So that was the LAST STRAW I called and got her a Doc's Appointment and explained to the Doc why I was there and what I had been going through for the past year, since he was a Family Practice Doc he couldn't do much as in a Treatment thing, but... he did get a referal in for her to see the Child Phsycologist (Sp?) here on post. He spoke briefly with the Phsycologist and they both were in agreement that Ashlyn sounded like she was showing signs of ODD and they wanted to get her in ASAP so that they can start testing her and get her on Meds for this. I was in tears when the Doc told me everything he'd just done for me. I felt like part of a weight had been lifted off my sholders. I so wanted to HUG this man for doing what he did. My daughter isn't a MONSTER 24-7,she get's along fine with other children though, there are times when she can be the sweetest little thing and then there are the times when she's having an EPISODE and making life miserable for me. We don't have many friends here on post because I'm a bit shy and she stays with me most of the day and has no other little kids HER AGE here to play with.

My question is, Is do any of you have a child with ODD or any Behavorial Disorders and how do you deal with it and if so, what ways are you findng to better control your child's issues? Any advice is welcome.

So What Happened?

I finally got the CALL BACK I'd been waiting for from Child Phsycology Clinic, they wanted JUST ME to come in on the first visit so that they can talk to me and get a better idea of what's going on and Ashlyn's behavior. I guess so they'll know what plan of action to take and how to treat her. I go to that appointment on the 30 th of october. ( When my husband gets back from Yakimah)...

THANK YOU to "EVERYONE" that has made so many HELPFUL Suggestions and gave Advice. I soooooo APPREICATE it. Still looking in to seein about the books suggested as well. I will let you guys know more as it continues later on with appointments and such. Thank ALL of you once again. Gosh I LOVE this place. So Helpful and such warm people here.

Hi D. L. I feel so much compassion for you. I'm a mom of 2 boys ages 8 and 10 (birthdays were THIS month). I have been dealing with a similar issue, except that my son would beat up on his bro instead of himself. We saw many counselors who did not help AT ALL. Finally we saw a child psychiatrist whom I highly recommend. John Gordon who practices here in CDA. My son was put on prescriptions and that, with weekly sessions helped. It's been over a yr since we started and my son has been off the med and counseling for a few months now. There are great books out there on the subject. Please email at ____@____.com for a personal touch. I've been on internet support groups and read many books so I may be able to help you a little.

Hi D.,

You are a WAY more experienced Mom than I am, but I feel for your situation and wanted to offer that I have heard AMAZING stories about kids having a fabulous response to adjustments in diet (removing sugar, preservatives and coloring).

Hi D.,

My son, who is now 13 yrs old, was diagnosed ADHD at age 3 and ODD at age 6. Please know that you are not alone. You definitely need to keep seeking the right pyschologist for your daughter. The ODD is so unbelievable. My son has seen 6 psychologists and is about to see his 7th tomorrow. We as parents need tools to deal with these behavior issues. There is a wonderful book called "The Defiant Child". I call it my little bible.

My son is very defiant, oppostional, and vindictive. If I discipline him, he "gets me back" by destroying my home piece by piece and he cuts up my clothes, puts holes in the walls, kicks out slats in the fence, etc. At this time what is really working is losing privileges immediately. I also reward him immediately when he makes good choices. I have to handle every day hour by hour. Please let us know if you are getting the help you need. You need to be healthy and sane to deal with this. Do you have family to help give you a badly needed break? Your daughter needs it too.

I am a single mother of three children, 11, 7, and 4. My 7 yr old was diagnosed with ODD 2 years ago, and my son is diagnosed last year with ADHD, so I know where you are comeing from. Reading your post was like I was living it all over again. I am learning everyday have to deal with these issues plus my own. So if there is any question that I maybe able to answer I would gladly like to help.

The only thing that I did what get my daughter into the BEST program at SHH, that helped her, and I think it is time for a refresher course.

Please feel free to contact me, on yahoo, bluglitterpants.. would love to hear from you

I have a friend with a child who has behavoral problems, I am not sure what it is called, but her child does the same things, and she takes him to The Childrens Center, kind of a daycare, but they work with him on his issues, and it does wonders.
Good luck.

I had a special education teacher tell me to draw it out. Her actions and then what she did to the other person and her self. It was very effective with my son who would hit for no reason but just to do it. He wasn't angry or mad it was just overstimulation. He was really upset after she sat him down and explained it to him. My son was diagnosed with a disorder for a childrens hospital with dysphraxia (sp) after may people thought he was autistic. I didn't believe he was and the doctors agreed. Three was a hard age for us also but it is getting better so there is some hope at the end of the tunnel. Best of luck and God bless

I am a medical transcriptionist for a child's mental health doc and many children are successfully treated for ODD with the right medication. Sometimes it takes a while to figure out what works right for each child. Just keep after it and you will find an answer.
