My Baby Refuses to Sit up and Stiffens Her Legs.

My baby is physically capable of sitting up and has done so on some occasions. She can sit up for about 20 minutes at a time without support. In the beginning she did not mind it and would sit up without complaint. Although back then she did not sit up for very long. Now she just hates to do it and screams and cries whenever I try to make her sit up. She stiffens her leg and arches her back and refuses to sit up. She just seems to always want to be in the standing position. She is 6 and a half months old. Anyone else have any experience with this?

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for all your advice! I will try not to worry so much about her refusal to sit. I do have an excercauser that she absolutely loves! It is good to know that other babies do this too and that it is not unusual!

I'm sorry, but I'm giggling. Yes. I have had this with most of my children. They loved to stand, even at such a young age. They did not want to be on the floor. I would suggest putting her in one of those activity centers that allows them to stand and play. They can sit a bit and rest their legs as needed. Mine loved those. Enjoy!!

my daughter always wanted to be standing, from the time she was a tiny baby. At her first well baby check up, the doctor was surprised by how she didnt want to sit for her exam, she wanted to stand.

She loved her exersaucer, I highly recommend them.

I took RIE classes starting when my baby was 4 months old. They taught me so much about how to encourage appropriate muscular development in my child. It's a big no-no to sit a child up before she is ready. In fact, they should crawl before they sit. They will sit up on their own when they are ready to pull themselves into that position. Strange but true. My daughter was text book. She learned to crawl at 7 months and learned to sit up two weeks later. She took her first independent steps at 9 months, and was a confident walker by 12 months. Now at 2 & 1/2 she has such amazing body confidence and climbs as well as a 4 year old. Nature knows best. Your baby is right. Don't put her into positions that her body is not ready to support. If you are interested in the RIE concepts, you can find some info here: http://www.rie.org/

Mine too. The younger boy, only 3 months old, wants to stand and cries and fusses when you try to encourage sitting for very long. Tonya had good suggestions. Good luck!

My daughter was the same way at that age!! Loved to stand but wouldn't sit and would stiffen her legs. Don't worry, she'll get past that stage and then she'll love sitting up and playing with her toys!

hello S.,

my baby's situation is different from the other posters. when i try to sit baby down she would just roll to her sides or simply fall back. come to find out her hip socket was out of joint since birth. one way to check is to see if both legs are the same length, dont pull on them just press lightly on both knees. she had corrective surgery at 7mth old, and as a young adult today shes fine.

Yes girls are like this. Some might be strong willed and want to be like you, walking and getting around. Just make sure she crawls, it is very important for development of the brain and physically.

Hello my name is V., my daughter Isabella is the same way..she stiffens her legs and refuses to sit for more than 20 seconds it seems! It is frusterating to me because she doesn't like to cuddle either NEVER puts her head on my chest or shoulder like when she was tiny..she has reflux and is now over it so I think..she hates tummy time and is only happy in her jumper :( I am lost totally but she has her 6 month check up tomorrow and you can bet I will bring this up..
