OK, my son is gettin about 3 teeth right now. He has had some really nasty diapers; i know this is gross but its been mucousy and frequent. Nothing he eats or does not eat changes this. I don't know if this is normal or not. I have looked up mucous in stool online and they have a gazillion scary reasons. I don't want to call the pediatrician just yet cuz we go in a few days. Does anyone have any advice or similar experiences as this. Please let me know. I might need to call the pediatrician tomorrow. FYI it has gotten better but still happens every other diaper, and I have cut out his morning milk???? !!!!?????

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well so far today he is ok! I think its just the teeth. I just hate to be a mother to race to the doctor for every little thing. I don't want him to be overmedicated. Thank you all for your advice. I'll keep you updated, and then I will post what the doc says just for future reference :) Also he has had his rotovirus shots so he can't get that. The other thing is, I can't change th appointment because its for his vaccinations and they will only do them at his 18month mark. They are so peticular, but I am calling right now :) (PS-my mama inlaw is a nurse and just told me this is all normal and that toddlers do get diarhea) We have been eating some yogurt which seems to help his belly? Don't know why. Also yesterday his appetite came on like crazy. He ate more than he has in a week and is still going :)!!!

the reason that it has gotten better is the cutting out the milk. Milk helps the body create mucus. Have you thought that maybe the baby needs so milk and not regular milk?

My daughters used to get the same way when they were cutting teeth. Some dr.'s will tell you that cutting teeth won't cause that but I've seen it myself! You can take him to the dr. if you want to or wait it out a few more days until the teeth come through.

I know the acidity in the babies tummy changes when they start teething so stuff like this can happen. Alot changes in their digestive system when they get teeth. If you would prefer a more natural way to avoid going to a doctor you could as a vitamin store if they have heard of this or if you go to a chiropractor he/she may have some good home remedies.

Have no fear.. it's normal. My son is 19 months and has those last 4 teeth to battle with. During the past 6 weeks he has had some nasty diapers and other issues like waking during the night, not wanting to eat, etc. I switched him to a lighter juice ( Gerber baby juice), give him yogurt and bananas, and the pediatrician told me to get Culturelle from my Whole foods or Basic food stores. This is a probiotic that can help firm up some of the diarrhea and help with soothing the tummy. My son has improved and if all else fails there are some great Oragel individual swabs that you can place at the site of the inflammation for the teeth.

Dear M;

I am a pediatric nurse-- the yogurt contains natural "good" bacteria that will get your little one's intestines back on track. (and thumbs up if he'll eat it!) I also have 2 daughters of my own, and I can tell you-- youe will always be obsessed with your kids bowel movements!! LOL! Just remember- keep it simple unless there are other symptoms (i.e. - fever, vomiting, pallor, fatigue, abdominal pain, excessive watery stool, irritability/fussiness) If combined with any other symptoms then it could actually be something to be concerned about. Good Luck and feel free to call on me anytime! (and yes-- it is just the teething!! you will soon find out that their stool will change ALOT depending on the circumstance!! wait till he eats his first crayon!)

Hey M.,
I'd give your doctor a shout and have them check it out. Take the most recent poopy diaper and they can send it for tests if need be.
I could be all dietary, but it's better to check it out so you don't have to worry about it or help your son through it as easily as possible.
And yes, you're right, the internet will shoot out a ton of scary things. Be sure to get accurate information before looking up anything and then go to set websites instead of people posting only opinions.
Good luck,
P.

If his stool also has a bad smell it could be Rotavirus. I would call his Doctor with any concerns. I work in a clinic and that is why we are there..to help our patients. Good luck.

I wouldn't cut his milk unless he has a fever. When my son was teething he had gross stools too but I don't think it had mucousy. You should call the doctor's office and ask one of the nurses if you don't want to wait.

Hello,
i may be completely wrong on this but i seems to me many years ago, probably in my growing up (in a med. Family) or when i was in nursing school i heard of a connection with "nasty diapers" (loose bowel) and teething. If i am wrong, i'm sorry. I have no children of my own but don't think this is anything serious. They may suggest pedia-lite.

Please let me know what you find out . Have a great day and a very happy easter.

the nasty poop is probably from the teething. it gets very runny and sometimes mucusy when they are cutting teeth. if you are going to the doctor soon i would just wait it out. i am also a devout Christian and think it is very refreshing seeing your profile. i love people who love the Lord and arent scared to tell others they do. God will bless you for that! have a wonderful day.

Hello M.,
I am a wellness consultant here in San Antonio, with a certificaion in detoxification. Has you child been on antibiotics, and if so, how often and which ones? Is he on any medications? Antibiotics can cause an overgrowth of c.dif ( a type of bacteria in the GI Tract )and other types of organisms which can cause what you are describing. Does he consume any dairy products? Please e-mail me if you would like to discuss further. It takes a little detective work sometimes to get to the bottom of what may be the cause. My first inclination is to recommend probiotics (the good bacteria). I can give you the name of a company in California that makes one of the world's best probiotics. Hope to hear from you.
C.
P.S. For those moms who suggest Soy, please go to www.wholesoystory.com to find out why you DON'T want your child or anyone consuming Soy products. Soy blocks thyroid hormones, is very estrogenic, meaning that anyone consuming Soy is ingesting Estrogen like compounds, which, for babies, can lead to fertility problems as adults and early puberty, causes GI tract problems, and a host of other health concerns. Don't take my word for it, check it out for yourself, or even better, buy the book "The Whole Soy Story".

I have a 3 and a 1 year old and the first one had some mucous poops. I had heard that they produce so much saliva when teething that they swallow so much that can happen. It can also upset there tummy's. Also, they can get congestion and them swallowing down that can make it mucousy too. My first one got sick a few times because of it. It wouldn't hurt to call your doctors office and talk to a nurse about it and see what they say. I hope this helps.

Why not call his pediatrician? I can almost always talk to one of the nurses, and they always give me peace of mind or tell me if it's something that should really be checked out right away? You can just move up the doctor appointment.

my son did the same thing. It was because he didn't drool. He would swallow it instead. It always happened when he was teething. Once he stopped teething, it went away. I would ask your doctor just incase.

it's probably just from teething. don't panic yet. if it's already getting better on it's own, there's probably nothing to worry about. you might mention it to the dr when you go in a few days. some drs. will tell you that teething doesn't cause ear aches, or diarrhea, but any experienced mom will tell you otherwise.

Hi M.,
The mucous that you see on the stool is drool. Some babies drool constantly through their mouth others through their stool. Talk to the Pediatrician and see what he/she says. I am more possitive that is just drool.

Don't worry your baby should do just fine.

I think it's pretty normal, but it always good to ask your doctor if you're worried about it. I would sugest cutting back on the runny foods and jucies it could make things worse. I found out with my son if you give them frozen waffels it helps with the teathing.(put in toster and refreeze)They don't realy eat then as much as they chew on them.

My son had diarrhea for about a month, and he was also teething a bit. I took him to the doctor and the doctor told us that some kids get "toddler diarrhea" and there is really no explanation for it. It did go away. The doctor suggested that I start giving my son probiotics. He gave us some samples and said he would write a prescription if we liked. I think probiotics are a good idea in general. When you go next week, ask for some samples. Double-check with your doctor, but hopefully it is just "toddler diarrhea."

I went through this with my two sons 3,2. When babies get their first teeth, they drool. Now that your son is 18 months, he no longer drools ( maybe not as much) so he swallows it instead. I would say that this is what causes the the more than dirty diapers. Try giving him some wheat crackers and unless I'm wrong, try to wait out the situation, it'll just get better. Good luck! :)

Well, it is always good to talk with your pediatrician and describe the problem, but I remember my little girl having "bad poopies" like that when she was around 12 months old. I was transitioning her off of formula and slowly introducing new foods into her diet.

Her diapers were really gross and very unnatural looking but she was not fevering and she was in a great mood. Still, I was so worried about her because of all the mucous. It was every single diaper. I also let myself get freaked out by the internet and all the things it could be.

I was about to take her in to the doctor, but my mom suggested she may be allergic to milk and that I try soy milk or something lactose free to see if that would help. I also gave her more pasta and potatoes to help out.
It did!
It turns out that my little girl's stomach cannot handle regular milk.
I started buying the Vanilla Soy Dream milk and though it is more expensive, it was well worth it!

I would have taken her to the doctor if it had not cleared up in 24 hours.

Best of luck,
S.
