My son will not take a nap! He shares a room with his sister (18 months) so he has always slept in my room for naps. For the past few months he will not sleep when its nap time, around noon. His sister is ready at that time. Should I wait to put him down until later? The problem is if he hears that sister is awake he will not sleep. I can only keep her so quiet!! I have the fan on high and light playing music in the room with him to hide some of the noise, but that dosent work. He will rest in my bed, is that enough?? They both go to bed at 8pm and wake at around 8am. Any suggestions I will take!!

What can I do next?

Is there a reason he can't nap in the same room as his sister? If you put them down at the same time you could go in there and read to them to gether or whatever it is you do when you put them down until they are both settled. Just an idea to try.

Maybe he doesnt need a nap. My daughter is 3 and rarely takes naps anymore. And when she does take a nap, she lays herself down. I know that nap time is good alone time, but he's getting bigger and isnt gonna nap every day.

Probably has outgrown naps...My 3 year old still probably needs one but refused to take one too. He will sleep in the car if he is really tired but rarely will take a nap at home. 12 hours is enough sleep. We still do quiet time for an hour though.

Hi N.,
I agree with everyone else, he might be outgrowing naps. My son is three and a half and hasn't taken a nap for about nine months. I do make him have quiet time when his brother naps. The transition time was kind of difficult because he still kind of needed a nap but wouldn't take one. We pushed his bedtime up to 7 until he adjusted. He now goes to be at 8. Good luck.

He probably is ready to give up his naps. My two older kids stopped napping around 2 yrs old. Thankfully my youngest who is almost 3 still takes naps - SOMETIMES. I can tell he is transitioning out of that, though. Your little guy is probably just outgrowing the need to take a nap. It is pretty common between 2-3 yrs old.

My daughter is 3 1/2 and she stopped taking naps a couple of months ago. I actually decided it was okay for her to stop becuase with a nap she was starting to stay awake in bed until 9 or 10 at night. Now she sleeps 12 hours or so at night and does pretty well. She still has "quiet" time though while her brother naps in the afternoon. That works for everyone!

Maybe he's just out grown the need for a nap? I also have a 3 year old, and he stopped taking naps about 3 months ago (his birthday is in September). He does well all day with out it. He now goes to bed at night around 7:30 or 8pm. When I was making him stay in bed and sleep he'd be up until 10 or 11pm. He does have to spend sometime in his room during his sisters nap time but he has plenty of toys to play with and doesn't seem to mind. Maybe try not forcing the issue of actually sleeping and see how it goes. Pop in an educational video or play a quiet game while your daughter sleeps or just put him in your room with toys so you can have a few minutes to yourself.

My son stopped taking naps just before 3 years old. He does fine with no fussiness and goes to bed around a decent time still. my daughter is 1 1/2 and some days she does not take one either. I just play it by ear...if they get cranky, they go down. If they are fine, I let them stay up. If you want to message me, I am in the Chesterfield area and always looking to meet new people.
