My 23-Month-old Twins Still Wake up a Lot at Night

My boys are soon going to turn two years old. They have been suffering from teething aches from about 4 months of age, but recently with their K9s coming forward, it's been very tough. One of the boys mostly sleeps through the night, but the other wakes up at least 2 and sometimes 5-6 times a night. When they cry and are in pain, nothing comforts them expect being held and carried. I wonder if other parents have similar experiences and if you have any tips on what helps your child to sleep better. Obviously, we are not supportive of cry-it-out and other similar approaches, and are impacted by the attachment parenting philosophy. I'm just curious if we can do anything other than what we are doing, and when it will phase out.

So What Happened?

My boys just had their K-9s come through and they started sleeping through the night -- hurray! Thank you for the responses which normalized this experience. I know it is normal for this age, but it'd been h*** o* us, so everyone is happy we are sleeping well now!

As long as you keep getting up at night, so will the boys. Learning to sleep through the night, is a developmental skill just like walking, using a spoonor a cup, brushing their teeth and toileting. You are the parent and you are the one to set boundries, like staying in their bed at night. You don't let them hit or bite. There are many different approaches to getting to the goal of sleeping all night, but consistancy is the key to success.

My 23 month old has only been sleeping through the night for 2 months (since I stopped night nursing). But he wakes when he is actively cutting a tooth. he also is very sensitive to teething pain. His K9's have cut on top and not the bottom yet. I give him Tylenol when it is acute and homeopathic tablets or liquid during the day or when hey are not actually erupting. Cuddles and rocking helps. It won't last forever.

Hi E.,

Congratulations on your twin boys! My son is 17 mos old and he is teething too with his bicuspids and molars. Crying at night with a lot pain I assume. I would give him Motrin for infants. It really helps him sleep through the night. Hope this will help your boys as well. Good luck!!!

This is normal. My 2-year-old doesn't always sleep through the night, either--and she's had her canine teeth for months, now. We co-sleep, she usually just gets a cuddle & goes back to sleep.
