We're moving back to the East Coast in August, and I want to start doing some research on how to go about moving our stuff now. Do any of you have any experience with moving companies and/or auto shipping companies? We have a 2-bedroom apartment with pretty much all IKEA (so relatively lightweight) furniture and want to ship our Toyota Corolla as well. Any help to kind of kickstart my research would be great.

Thanks a lot,
K.

K.,
I moved from NYC to Los Angeles in June 2006, I used a company called Craters & Freighters, they had reasonable prices, and were very helpful and gave me a good service.

It is a franchise, so I think you can google them to find one near where you live.

Hope this helps!

When we moved from San Diego to Reno, I used that site. You can put in a little info and the site gives the info to moving company's who will contact you and give you quotes for everything! We ended up doing it ourselves, but it's a good way to get in contact with a lot of different company's without having to call them all. Moving America is also a good one to look at. Depending on when in August you are moving it will be more expensive. Summer is the height of moving season and they raise prices and reservations fill quick! Starting now is a good idea so you can get the time table you need. If you decide to do it yourself (which we did) Don't use U-haul! Our truck broke down on the side of the freeway and we were stuck out there for 5 hours before someone came out to fix the truck, then they couldn't fix it so we had to wait for a tow truck. The tow truck driver told us we were about his 3rd u-haul so far that day and he had 2 more after us. When we finally got Reno and returned the truck they told us a lot of the trucks have been having problems. Use a different company. Hope this helps. Good luck!

Not sure about where you are located. But contact Lee Herberholz of Star Moving Systems. ###-###-#### EX 305. Her email is ____@____.com Very trust worthy company and whereever you are she can help. There are LOTS of rip-off places out there. You have to be extremely careful. I promise you that Star Moving is a good, reputable company. And Lee is of the highest ethics......which is why she works there.
Take care.

Hi K. ... My partner and I moved from Minneapolis to Portland, OR last August and we used a company called 'Movex' (www.movex.com). They deliver a semi trailer to your house, you load everything and secure the load with provided materials, they drive it to your new address and leave it for you to unload. We found this to be an economical solution for us and our experience with the company was very positive. We did a lot of research beforehand as it was scary to entrust all our belongings to a moving company. I believe they have car packages, as well, but you'd have to check the website for that. Good luck!

Hello! A great company that moved me once was Gentle Giant. They were careful and did a great job. A word of caution about Ikea type furniture, it doesn't move well and many companies don't include it in insurance claims because it is often pressboard and can be damaged easily. If it can be taken apart ahead of time I'd suggest you do so, we recently moved and had something destroyed with no recourse because of the "lightweight" materials it is made with.

Good luck!

When we moved from Chicago to California, we just used Yellow freight lines. They dropped off a container, we loaded it up and when we were done, they sealed it up. You pay for the space you use in the truck, and if you don't use the whole thing, they will add something else to the truck. We hired guys to load and unload the truck for us. It was the most cost-effective way we found to move.

I can't help with the car, as we sold one of ours and drove the other out with our five cats.

Good luck with your move!

If you have anyone there to pick up stuff, I would suggest sending it by Greyhound bus (yes, they do that). That would work for anything up to beds. Also, Budget Rentals is cheaper then UHaul. Our family has moved from Wa state to South Carolina and back again. We drove both ways and wouldn't suggest it with small child.

My husband and I moved here from Flordia in June of last year. We used N. American. We had several moving companies come look at all our stuff and give us estimates on how much it will cost. I do know that N. American and another company, would not move any of our pre-fab stuff(we had a computer desk and a couple of other small items) unless we signed a waiver. I guess it doesn't hold up well.
As far as the car, I am not sure.
Good luck.

Call auto-driveaway co...they have college students drive the cars out to you, so they get a chance to visit the countryside. eVeryone is checked out and licensed with a signed agreement to treat your car great. we used them twice and had NO problems...My advice after moving three times cross country is SELL it all! Ikea is here in CA and avialble to ship, so dont pay to move it unless it's a family treasure. Most moving companies will rob you, and unless you make a set price before the weight in, they will jack it up and hold your stuff hostage. I've had it happen twice now, especially with N American moving co...watch them! Get a quote on paper and have it weighed before the truck is filled with other people's stuff..they overcharge notoriously for moving cross country! I hope this helps.

Where do you live? My husband worked for Mayflower for a long time before getting a job with the City of Albany.
Mayflower can do all aspects of moving. Packing, loading, unloading, move your car too.
I recommend them highly.

We moved from New York to California two years ago and a friend recommended New York California Express. Here is their web address: http://www.moveeast.com/
They were VERY inexpensive (about $5000 for the whole trip). They were very efficient and took about five days to get across the country. There were only two issues: The New York guys who moved us out insisted on a huge tip. Also, the wheels on our office chair and one of our filing cabinets broke. Make sure your wheels are protected. Otherwise, these guys were GREAT. We had several quotes and no one came close to their quote. I would highly recommend them. I would NOT recommend renting a UHAUL to move. We did that once and took about two years off our lives with the stress. UHAUL is a very very unsafe company. They do not maintain their vehicles. Our truck didn't start, the side mirror fell off and my husband had an accident on the highway as a result... don't do it yourself.

Hi K., my husband and I checked so many places it was crazy and times stressing us out. the moving companies started like around $10,000 on up but for what we had ours was more $20,000. so we decided to go with a moving canistor where they come drop off the canister at your recidence then you pack it then call them back to come pick it up,and they have different size canisters. so you tell them about what amount of stuff you have they can give you an estimate of what it will cost.we found the companies in the yellow pages.good luck on your move.~L.~

We moved from Milwaukee, WI, to Belmont, CA, in 2005 and used the company Movex. It was cheaper than renting a Uhaul with a trailer for our car, and we just drove our car cross country. The deal with Movex is you can rent out a certain amount of space (by the foot) in a semi trailer. You pack it and they drive it to your location. You can rent enough space for a car, too, if you'd like. The only problem with this company is trying to estimate how much space you will need. We had a large (1000 square foot) loft apartment, so it wasn't easy to guess how much space we needed to move things. We ended up being 4 feet over our allotment, but it ended up being okay because we were the last customers to load their portion of the truck (they load multiple users into one haul). If you go over your allotment, they charge you for the extra space. But we got lucky and our driver didn't charge us. Anyway, Movex is a good option if you don't want to have to drive a big truck cross country. That was something I was concerned about. All our stuff arrived on time and without anything broken. Good luck with your move!

I would suggest moving it all your self.. Even if it costs more.. I had to move here because of the military and we thought itd be easier to have the movers come get our stuff instead of taking it ourselves and turns out alot of my stuff got broken and they were really ruff with my stuff.. So I would suggest getting a UHaul and a car puller and doing it yourself.. Its a long drive but it would be pretty to see the sights.. But if you cant drive yourselves then I would be really picky bout who you choose...
