I am just back from an unpaid maternity leave and realized that I forgot to pay the mortgage last month! Well, I did not have the money to pay it anyway...I will be able to pay it next month but...should I call the bank and talk to someone? Am I totally screwed? Should I even consider taking a cash advance on my credit card (if I even have the room on it)? I've never been in this financial situation before and I usually have it more together than this...

Your not screwed.

Definetly contact the bank, either by calling or in writing. Explain your situation and tell them when you will be able to make the payment. (you'll still have to pay the late fees). Do you have enough to pay just the pricipal and interest portion of the mortage. If you do, tell them that you'd like to pay that right away and send them the escrow portion within the next # of days. Document your phone call.

Do NOT take a cash advance on your credit card.

After your back on schedule, write a letter to each of the 3 credit card bureaus explaing what happened. It won't stop your credit score from taking a hit, but it will help you in the future when you need to apply for credit.

Definately call the bank. Explain to the bank your situation honestly and most times they will give the month off kiinda like they do at Christmas time where they just tack the extra payment to the end of the note. Course then you can make up the missed payment by taking your payment & dividing it by 12 and add that amount onto the next 12 payments and you will have reduced your interest by thousands. I do this every year so that in twelve years I will have made a year's worth of payments and thereby reducing my intrest enought o knock off 5 years worth of payments! Just be sure to mark that you want the additional amount to go towards principle. Lenders tend to be forgiving if you are up front & honset and acknowledge that you owe them. They will work with you. They may have fees associated too, but it looks better if you don't just blow them off. I forgot to make my car payment when I got married & went on our honeymoon. When we got back we had a family death and it was like 3 weeks later when I went through my mail & realized. I called & explained. They waived the late payment fee and it never showed up on my credit report. Best of luck to you & your new one.

It would probably be best to call your bank and let them know when you plan to pay it. I think the worst you will have to do is pay a late fee on it. My family has had financial troubles in the past and had trouble making out mortgage. The bank only got concerned with it when we were about 3 months behind.
Most banks will be willing to work with you, just call.

I think you should call your bank. You might be able to defer one payment. So you wouldn't have to stress over doubling to catch up.

Call them - in this day and age, I think we've all learned that we need to be honest about what's going on. It doesn't mean they'll be any more sympathetic, but it's better than them starting foreclosure proceedings that can't be reversed.
