My believe my son has developed a pumpkin allergy. He loves pumpkin pie and pumpkin chocolate chip cookies. I was given a pumpkin spice candle and it smelled so good. My son said his eyes were watery and he felt itchy. When he was at school they carved pumpkins. His eyes got watery and itchy again, his hands and anything else that touched the putmpkin started itching. When making pumpkin cupcakes for a Halloween party he started getting itchy. When I let him taste the dough, his throat starting itchy and his eyes were itchy and watery again. I feel so bad for him because he loves pumpkin so much. So, what I'm asking is if anyone has a recipe for mock pumpkin pie. I looked on a recipe site but didn't find anything. Can anyone help? It's his favorite thing about Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the responses. I'll be buying some butternut squash and sweet potatoes soon. I can hardly wait to try them and see what he thinks.

Yes it definitely sounds like he has a pumpkin allergy. You can make him a sweet potato pie, they taste almost identical. I have a pumpkin allergy too, it's a bummer because I love the taste, but a lot of times we love what we are allergic to. I really enjoy sweet potato pie so he might too, give it a try!

I don't know about a mock pumpkin pie, but I do know that you can make a sweet potato pie using the same spices that tastes quite similar. Look on foodtv.com and allrecipes.com.

Try replacing pumpkin with sweet potatoes. I know in pie it is very similar tasting. I haven't tried it as a replacement in any other items but I am sure it would work just the same.

Good luck.

Is it just pumpkin, or is it any squash? I have had success making "pumpkin" pancakes, pies, etc using baked, pureed acorn and banana squash instead of pumpkin puree. (if you do go this route, you can cook up a lot of puree at one time and freeze it for use later)

You might also look into sweet potato pie recipes.

there are lots of great recipes on the internet for sweet potato pie. Is he allergic to other similar vegetables like butternut squash? If not, you could try and substitute that for the pumpkin. Just peel it and bake it up with a little oil brushed on in a 350 oven until nice and soft; then puree it.

Winter squash is an excellent substitute for pumpkin. I use it more often than I do the pumpkin in baking. I don't know if your son would have the same type of reaction to the squash tho.

Hi R., I would add pureed sweet potato instead of the pumpkin. Use the same spices, same recipe, everything. I'll bet that it tastes great and he won't be able to tell the difference. Let us know if it works.

If you Google "Mock Pumpkin Pie" several recipes show up, although I was amazed at how many sites labled their recipes as "mock" when they were made with real pumpkin!

I found these 2 and they look good. Although I've never tried it, I've heard that the one made with pinto beans is really good. Good luck!

Sweet potato pie tastes a lot like pumpkin, but I think it is better. That might be a good alternative.

Ugh, that sounds like an allergy. I'm so sorry! You may want to get him scratch or blood tests to be sure. Otherwise, remember that pumpkin is just a squash - it probably isn't the pumpkin he loves, but the seasonings we put on to make it taste sweet. You could try using acorn squash instead (of course, touch him with some first to make sure he doesn't have a reaction to it as well). If that's no good, sweet potatoes are also a great alternative. Good Luck!

R.,
I always make my homemade "Pumpkin"pie out of acorn squash because I like the flavor better. But a sweet potato pie would be great too, and its not related to the pumpkin squash so the allergy risk would not be there.

My skin can't handle the pumpkin on it either, it gets red irritated and itchy. So I wear dish gloves to carve them.
One thing with allergies, is each time you are exposed to the food or drug it can get a little worse. So be careful how many times you let him eat it before he gets tested. It could turn in to an anaphylactic reaction eventually.
Hopefully it is just an intolerance that his body will be able to get over and handle.
Its probably the spices he likes. You could try making other treats, cookies, muffins, and just use the same spices, and he might like it just as much.
Good luck

here is one web site I found, but you could do a search for it too, just to get more info.

You can make pumpkin pie with butternut squash and it will come out right (though if he reacts to pumpkin he might react to squash too). Pie with squash will be slightly more golden in color but you will not notice any difference in taste, since most of what you taste are the spices anyways! Good luck, what a horrible allergy to have popped up with! Maybe it wont came back next year, keep your fingers crossed!

You might take him to see an allergist. It's possible that he's allergic to pumpkin but not another, similar-flavored squash. Could be especially convincing if you do the rest of the spices the same as with your pumpkin recipes.

As an allergy mom, I just have to say that the itchy throat is a BIG red flag for anaphylaxis. Obviously you're very attentive...with his contact sensitivity and the itchy throat I'd be super-vigilant as the holidays approach. You never know when someone's going to offer him some cookie or other treat that has pumpkin in it.

Feel free to contact me if you want more food allergy info. Best of luck with your recipe replacements!

Check out foodnetwork.com and search for Alton Brown. He did an episode with sweet potato pie, and it was supposed to taste like pumpkin. Although I haven't tried this particular recipe, I have tried many of his recipes with great luck.

i would suggest butternut squash as a replacement, but is he allergic to orange squashes or to squash in general?
i made butternut squash bread with a pumpkin bread recipe and it was great. just use a recipe that does not call for canned pumpkin. i believe you can find recipes on stickers on pie pumkins at the store. the only thing to know would be how much cooked squash to use, everything else would be the same as any other recipe. i think the general measurement might be 2 cups.

Try using sweet potatoes instead of pumpkins. To keep the flavor right use all of the other correct spices plus condensed milk. If you don't like condensed milk for health reasons, use half condensed milk with half regular milk. Good luck!

Try cooking up a butternut squash or a banana, Hubbard, or other hard winter squash, pureeing it, and using it instead of pumpkin. While it is possible he might be allergic to these, too, maybe he isn't. Any of them are good substitutes for pumpkin. Butternut squash is probably the best, but it is also the most closely related to pumpkin.
