Mock Pumpkin Pie
My believe my son has developed a pumpkin allergy. He loves pumpkin pie and pumpkin chocolate chip cookies. I was given a pumpkin spice candle and it smelled so good. My son said his eyes were watery and he felt itchy. When he was at school they carved pumpkins. His eyes got watery and itchy again, his hands and anything else that touched the putmpkin started itching. When making pumpkin cupcakes for a Halloween party he started getting itchy. When I let him taste the dough, his throat starting itchy and his eyes were itchy and watery again. I feel so bad for him because he loves pumpkin so much. So, what I'm asking is if anyone has a recipe for mock pumpkin pie. I looked on a recipe site but didn't find anything. Can anyone help? It's his favorite thing about Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
So What Happened?™
Thanks for all the responses. I'll be buying some butternut squash and sweet potatoes soon. I can hardly wait to try them and see what he thinks.

Yes it definitely sounds like he has a pumpkin allergy. You can make him a sweet potato pie, they taste almost identical. I have a pumpkin allergy too, it's a bummer because I love the taste, but a lot of times we love what we are allergic to. I really enjoy sweet potato pie so he might too, give it a try!

I don't know about a mock pumpkin pie, but I do know that you can make a sweet potato pie using the same spices that tastes quite similar. Look on foodtv.com and allrecipes.com.

Try replacing pumpkin with sweet potatoes. I know in pie it is very similar tasting. I haven't tried it as a replacement in any other items but I am sure it would work just the same.
Good luck.

R.,
I always make my homemade "Pumpkin"pie out of acorn squash because I like the flavor better. But a sweet potato pie would be great too, and its not related to the pumpkin squash so the allergy risk would not be there.
My skin can't handle the pumpkin on it either, it gets red irritated and itchy. So I wear dish gloves to carve them.
One thing with allergies, is each time you are exposed to the food or drug it can get a little worse. So be careful how many times you let him eat it before he gets tested. It could turn in to an anaphylactic reaction eventually.
Hopefully it is just an intolerance that his body will be able to get over and handle.
Its probably the spices he likes. You could try making other treats, cookies, muffins, and just use the same spices, and he might like it just as much.
Good luck
E.
here is one web site I found, but you could do a search for it too, just to get more info.

Try using sweet potatoes instead of pumpkins. To keep the flavor right use all of the other correct spices plus condensed milk. If you don't like condensed milk for health reasons, use half condensed milk with half regular milk. Good luck!

Try using butternut squash instead of pumpkin in the pie recipe. He'll never be able to tell the difference!

i would suggest butternut squash as a replacement, but is he allergic to orange squashes or to squash in general?
i made butternut squash bread with a pumpkin bread recipe and it was great. just use a recipe that does not call for canned pumpkin. i believe you can find recipes on stickers on pie pumkins at the store. the only thing to know would be how much cooked squash to use, everything else would be the same as any other recipe. i think the general measurement might be 2 cups.

Check out foodnetwork.com and search for Alton Brown. He did an episode with sweet potato pie, and it was supposed to taste like pumpkin. Although I haven't tried this particular recipe, I have tried many of his recipes with great luck.
