My Daughter is a Freshman in High School and continues to struggle in math. She absolutly hates math and i think the fact that she despises it so much makes it even harder for her to learn it. We are trying to find a good summer program/camp that emphasises math skills, but taght in a fun environment for a teenager. Not sure if this kind of math camp even exsist, but I thought it was worth a try. If you have any suggestions, please send them my way. We are in the SF Bay Area, but are willing to have her travel to an overnight camp. Thank you!
I too hate math. I get Geometry but Algebra just looks like Sanskrit to me. There is a form of dyslexia where the student can read just fine but has math and spelling issues. See if you can have her tested for that form of dyslexia.
The Technical College here has a set of free classes called GOAL they are designed to bring someone up to speed on basics. Check to see if anything like that is offered near you.
Maybe just hire her a private tutor? Freshmen girls in high school can have it pretty rough, especially if anyone ever finds out they went to math camp :/ No offense, but I was in high school not too long ago, and that may make things harder for her socially... I don tknow how important that is to her, but I know its a big deal to teens...
I HATED math, and I got a private tutor. I dont like math now, but I get way less frustrated with it, and know what Im doing around numbers now...
I don't know if they have these in your area, but there is a national company called Mathnasium that does math tutoring in their facilities. You take your child there and the tutors work with them, circulate to other kids while your child's working, and return to your child as much as needed to advise, etc. The best part for us was that the schedule is very flexible -- you book for X hours total and tell them you want to do Y hours per week, on certain days and times, but if you need to make a change any given week (or day) you just tell them and come when you can. Very flexible for summer. Look into it and see if the format is right for your child. I don't know that it's as "fun" as you're hoping for, but frankly, at high school level, I don't know how much a math tutor or camp could make things fun and still get in the work the student needs to do. Mathnasium does do a system of rewards for finishing certain worksheets etc. but the prizes may not interest older kids (though my elementary student loves them).
I'm not sure where you are located in the bay area, but I'll mention a few places I know. Someone mentioned Mathnasium. They have locations in Cupertino, and in the Cambrian and Evergreen areas in San Jose.
