Looking for the Right Pediatrician in Austin

After waiting for an hour to see our current pediatricain today, and spending all of 5 minutes with her, I am finally fed up! I am wondering if anybody has any recommendations for a pediatrician with a philosophy more like Dr. Sears or T. Berry Brazelton. I just want someone who will take their time with my son and at least pretend to listen to my concerns, while also supporting the choices I make as far as breastfeeding, co-sleeping, etc... Does anybody have a doctor like this, or am I just expecting too much??? We live in Central Austin, but at this point I'm willing to drive, thanks so much!

So What Happened?

I haven't narrowed it down just yet, but I just wanted to thank everybody for their input on their pediatricians. I'm actually looking forward to finding the right doctor for my son, and you ladies are wonderful! I can't thank you all enough for the advice and kind words, I won't doubt myself again!

Hello K.,
I highly recommend Dr. William Caldwell. He is very respectful of what parents want for their children and he is a fantastic doctor. Their website is http://www.austexpediatrics.com/
There is usually a long wait time when you do have an appointment, but only because he takes his time with each patient. I just adore him as I don't feel like it's just a business transaction and he has a real affinity for kids.

I used to go to Dr. Elizabeth Bartlett before we moved to Cedar Park. Her office was off of Jester in the West Lake area. I now take my family to the North West Diagnostic in Cedar Park. We see Amanda Gay and she is great. She absolutely takes her time with us (we have 4 kids) and she is not biased about co-sleeping. So if all else fails and you choose to drive I also highly recommend Amanda Gay in Cedar Park.

I have a wonderful one for you.....Dr. Gabriel Millar...he's across the street from RR Hospital though....WE LOVE HIM.
###-###-####....I can't say enough good things about him. He's a pediatric allergist as well, and knows the difference between a cold and allergies. He's the BEST....has a great team in his office as well. The nurse practioner in there is great too.
Best of luck...I hope Round Rock is not too far. If you give him a try, tell him the Mauers' sent you...we send all our friends.

Good Luck.

Dr. Ross PRochnow with Austin Regional Clinic is GREAT! First of all he has 5 children of his own (last one was a girl) and so he's seen it all! He DOES sit and spend as much time with you as you want and answers all your questions and concerns without any judgement. I do have to say though that because he does this for all his patients he does seem to run late and if you need a visit NOW he is usually booked. He reminds me of a young version of Mr. Rogers - a gem! He's with Austin Regional Clinic which I also like because you can call a nurse any hour of the day and get your questions answered as well. The other doctors we've seen when Dr. Prochnow wasn't on call were great - haven't met a bad one yet.

Having worked in the medical field, I am very picky. We see an amazing pediatrician, Dr. K. Thorstad. She is on the board at the Children's Hospital as well. We love her as well as her office staff. They have 2 offices and there # is 833-PEDI. She is great!

Hi K.,

I'm sorry to hear about your pediatrician experience. I've had other doctors like that but my pediatrician is the best! If you don't mind driving, they are totally worth it. We go to Dr. Addy @ Treehouse Pediatrics off of 620 & Great Oaks in Round Rock. Their entire staff is wonderful!!! They take the time to listen to you, get to know you and your child and really care. They are very pro-breastfeeding, etc.

You are not expecting too much, your doctor just isn't meeting your expectations.

I just moved to the area. My son has CHARGE Syndrome and sees many specialists. I get referrals from nurses. THey always know the best doctors!

I go to Treehouse Pediatrics in Round Rock off of 620 behind the Jack in the Box. They actually scheduled a free appt for me to talk to the doctors and get a tour of the practice. I since have needed this pediatrician to fill out forms for financial help for my son's medical issues and he even called me and discussed it with me over the phone and did not sound rushed. He was willing to take his time and make sure we got it filled out correctly the way I wanted it. I love that kind of practice. His name is Dr. Travis.

Good luck.

I really like Dr. Trester at Central Family Practice, located in central Austin on 34th St near Lamar. He is very respectful of our choices as parents and they schedule it so well that we have never been in the waiting room longer than 5 min. The downside is that they don't process insurance, so you have to do it yourself or pay out of pocket.

I looked around for a pediatrician that fit me and my daughter and I finally hit the jackpot. Her name is Lydia Norton at Bee Caves Pediatrics. She takes as much time as I need at each visit. I never feel like she is trying to push me out the door. We also had a lengthly conversation about vaccines which is something I feel strongly about. Unlike most of the other doctors I spoke with, she supported my decision and made me feel like I was in control of my babies health care. I also never have to wait!!! They are also available on Saturdays which is really nice. I hope this helps!!!
Her number is 2499 S Capital of Texas Hwy #1
