Looking for Somewhere to Swim My Dog

Hi Moms! I know this is going to sound crazy - but I need to find somewhere to swim my dog. He is a 90 lb. black lab and had surgery on his leg in April. Our vet said I should let him swim to help build the muscle back up but I don't know where to go. Too many gators in the ponds around us and he's never been to the ocean. Does anyone know of a "safe" pond or lake or somewhere to take him to swim in the Trinity/New Port Richey area? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

What can I do next?

There is a great dog park in Ft Desoto. There is a fairly large beach that is off leash that would be perfect although a little far. There is also Key Vista Park nearer to you but you have to walk him about 1/2 mile before you reach the water. If you go there be careful about oyster shells. If you go towards the walk up tower there is less of them.

Good luck.

O f course a pool would be the surest thing, but Howard Park beach on the left of it's causeway is a safe, family friedly area for you and the family to go to. Not far from where you live! Good luck!

deb,

If you have a friend who has a pool that would be the safest & cheapest. I would not trust any standing body of water (ponds etc).

There are vets who have underwater treadmills. This is a more expensive service. But worth looking into.

When we go to Fred Howard Park there's people with dogs between the park and the beach area. I know they're not allowed down on the beach, but that road in between they're obviously allowed. During the week, it's not that crowded either.

Ponds and fresh water around this area are pretty scary for pets. We allow our dog to swim in the pool. We do take him to the gulf for a good swim and rinse him off really good when we return home. Discourage him about drinking the water. We have also taken him to the Weeki Wachee River. There are many communities around that have small ponds probably not big enought o house reptiles. Waters Edge in Hudson has several. Orchid Lake in Port Richy has several small gatorless ponds.

Hi!

THere is a dog park in south tampa on Davis Island. There is a fenced area on the hillsborough bay where dogs can enter and swim in the water. It is always packed with dogs and their owners.

You must go to the Honeymoon Island Dog Beach! Your dog will be in doggie heaven! It's a gorgeous beach and your dog can swim to his hearts content. Don't worry about it being the ocean - it's shallow and he'll love it. Just google "honeymoon island" and you'll find it. It's not very far from you.
