Looking for Preschool for 3-Yr-old in NW or W Houston

Looking for a preschool for my son. He had been in the Primrose School, which had such a fabulous program- curriculum was great, the age divisions were great, we just loved it. BUT we had to take him out about 9 months ago because of teacher turn-over. He would have a different teacher every week, sometimes every couple of days!!! He had been staying with my sister & mother-in-law on alternating days after I broke my leg & tuition was going to medical bills... Right now he is in a day care, but it's not really educationally based. He really needs the stimulation of more curriculum rather than just baby-sitting. We had spent a couple of weeks, where I took time off work to go check out different places, but there was always some major issue- like unlocked doors on a busy street corner, unsafe gates, etc. We acutally got a great recommendation for one place right on my way to work, but they don't have any spots available until the end of May! At this point, we were considering just waiting it out while he gets used to being on a schedule again.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated! We live off Jones Rd and Cypress-N Houston in far NW Houston; I work off the Beltway and Westpark (near Westheimer)on the westside. A program near either of these locations or somewhere along the beltway on the way would work great.

So What Happened?

Well, we are more impressed with the place we were intending to keep him temporarily than we thought we'd be... He's already really trying to write his name- unfortunately it was on his wall & sheet with a non-washable marker he found in the middle of the night, but still... He's just thriving in general. I really think my husband working during the day again so we can establish a set routine really helps too.
Thanks for all the suggestions, I will definitely keep them in mind if things start to go south.

This very well may be the school to which you referred to as not having any openings, but my all-time favorite Pre-school facility is Greystone House Montessori. If your son is anywhere near as articulate and stimulus starved as my daughter was at that age, the program is wonderful. They might be slightly off your commute path, but in my humble opinion it would be worth the driving time. The location my daughter attended is near the corner of Cypresswood and Kuykendahl, but they now have four locations one of which is off of 1960 in the Willowbrook area - www.greystonehouse.com. She was very happy there, and I attribute her very strong and early reading skills to the very devoted teachers and the method of curriculum. They also provide a wonderful meal plan that is based on a Feingold Phase-I diet. My little girl is now 11 and is reading at or above a college level, a straight-A gifted and talented program student, who is very self-motivated in her studies and remembers her Montessori days with fondness, wishing that public school was more self-paced because she is often bored in her present classes. There is another Montessori school off of Cypresswood that a friend's sons attended that was pretty wonderful as well. I cannot remember the name exactly but I think it was Spring-Klein Montessori or something along those lines.

Call Collaborative for Children at ###-###-#### and speak with a Child Care Consultant/Parent Educator (it's free). They will match you up with what's in your area or route to work with a preschool or center with preschool. Let them know about the Primrose experience and turnover. They keep track of that in their database.

My children are 12 and 14, but when we lived on that side of town we had a great Montessori School off of Grant and Jones. I believe Montesorri Child Development Center. We absolutely loved it. Good luck!

Have you looked into the Lamb School at Metropolitan Baptist? I hear they are wonderful. Also, St. Timothy's Lutheran Church on Hargrave (behind Methodist Willowbrook Hospital) has always had an excellent preschool. I'm sure they're both in the phone book. Hope this helps.

I work right in the same area you do... I have 2 sons 3 yr and 3 mon. they both go to Creme de la Creme... It is pricey but my 3 yr old can count to 20 in english and spanish... they are very learning focused.

It is high dollar. we are not rich but momma is happy to take her lunch to do this for them. they are happy everyday and the teacher turnover is very low.

Have you heard of Greystone House? I know a mom whose daughter is in it and really likes it.. It's in the Commons area at Willowbrook-- on the other side of 1960 from the Mall.

Several of my friends send their children to Chrysalis off of Telge just south of Cypress N. Houston (across from Lamkin Elementary). I have friends that are teachers at Wee Wuns. I hope this little bit of information helps.

Hi D.,

My daughter goes to Crossbridge Christian on West Rd. off of Hwy 6 in Copperfield. She's 3.5 now and has been going since she was 18 mos. The other night she just started reciting The Plege of Allegiance. My husband and I just sat up amazed because we obviously did not teach it to her. The teacher's are usually the same throughout the whole year and are extremely loving. I would definately recommend it although it may be a little out of your way.

I have my 5 year old in the Lakewood Montessori school on the corner of Louetta and Malcomson. She has been there since she was an infant and we really like it (my son went there as well when he was little and he is now 13 which lets you know how long they have been in business). The teacher turnover is almost none for the main teachers. Although they do have a little for the assistants. It isn't cheap but they have done a really good job with both of my children. The classrooms are monitored from the office and while you can't see it on line they will tape a day for you if you like. We have been very happy with the school.

WeeWuns at the United Methodist Church at Cypress North Houston and Huffmeister is great as well as the Lamb School at the Met. My son has attended both. We chose to stick with the program at the WeeWuns because it provided longer hours without having to pay for him to take a nap as well as they have a car-line for pickup and drop off.

We loved Fair Haven Day school. It is off Gessner and 10 and close to the beltway. Lots of people have used this school and the teachers have been there for a long time. Call Mary to schedule a tour.
