Looking for Like-minded Mothers

I am a semi-liberal mother of a toddler who turns two June 1st, and it's been difficult to find groups of mothers I can actually tolerate (i know that's a rough word but, i do mean it). I want my daughter to have more socializing time with kids around her age, but I also want to be able to communicate with the mothers, and get along well with them. Who's out there!? :)

So What Happened?

WOW! I never imagined all the responses I got. So I'm going to ask this...for all those who responded in agreement of the troubling situation at finding mothers we like, why don't we all meet up somewhere? Perhaps start a mom group all our own?
I'd love to hear of your suggestions! Thanks again!

Hi J.,

I just wanted to let you know about this event that happens on the first Tuesday of every month at the Plano Art Centre, it is called A Love Supreme. It is for local artists to bring or perform their art, if you are interested. It is generally kid friendly. There are folks that help with this event that have kids. Also, I have some friends that try to get together for coffee or late nights at the DMA, if you would be interested, just let me know. I have a 20 month old girl named Zoe.

Hi J.-

I'm a 30 year old SAHM of a 19 month old. We are new to the area (from the east coast) and I am always looking to meet new people. I'm a liberal as well and live by "to each his own". I get along with most people but have a pet-peave about gossipy people.

Add me to the list!I live in Dallas, near dowtown, and have a 13-month old. BTW, you might also look into MetroplexAtheists.com or the Progressive Moms meetup, http://hipmama.meetup.com/166/calendar/5511174/?a=cv1_ve. I haven't actually been to events for either, but from lurking, they look like good places to meet people who won't use the word 'fellowship' as a verb!

Hi J.,

I am a Christian but I am also VERY Liberal! It drives my husband crazy sometimes! I have 4 girls 7,5,3 & 2.

Anytime you want to get together that would be great! Maybe all of us that replied to this thread can get together at a park or something!

Ilove being a liberal in Texas. 90% of the republicans here try to talk to me about it and when I start to argue my point they don't know enough about the subject to argue there point.
It makes me laugh!

E mail me anytime!

Hello J.,
I just laugh aloud when I read you request. I am moving from GA and consider myself to be semi-liberal as well. I am a very open-minded person and it tends to put me in the hot seat when i am playing the devils advocate in many conversations and meetings at work. Along with moving away from all family, I was afraid of just how many far right conservatives I may encounter while trying to build my son's skills in social interactions. My son will be two years old May 11. I practice conservatism in some areas of my life and liberalism in others. I am hoping to find mothers like myself who are able to open to all life have to offer. I will be living in the Carrollton area off of Midway. I hope that one day we could get our kids togehter for a playdate.

Hi J., you are not alone...I promise..though I know it feels that way. I too lean towards the liberal side of things. I have found *wonderful friends* and even some Christian friends who are opened minded. I met most of these people at First Unitarian Church of Dallas. www.dallasuu.org.

It is NOT a Christian church, but brings together people of many different beliefs....what pulls us all together is the desire of tolerance, justice, and treating all people fairly and realizing that God can mean many different things to different people. There is no one right answer.

There are over 1,000 members and they are wonderful people. There is a playgroup and wonderful classes.

I found it to be my island of reason here in DFW. I promise you that you are not alone!!!

Any Christian that makes you feel alienated is not being very Christ-like. However, if you are annoyed, just tell them you don't want to talk about politics or religion. Since you are in the Bible belt, it may be less stressfull at public play places if you don't put so many restrictions on who you consider tolerable. I have very good friendships with people that are not Christians and with people in other denominations (I call them damnations, lol). I have become really close to two moms since I have lived in Ft Worth; one is agnostic, the other is Catholic, and I am Seventh-Day Adventist. I am definately more educated and secure in what I believe becasue of those frienships.

All the best, Liz

Do I detect a heartwarming backlash here? I am so over organized religion being imposed on me and mine and this free country, I could scream!
I am all for critical thinking but with a close eye on teaching my young one how to get along with everyone.

My daughter turns 2 in June so they would probably have fun together. I work full time and live in Arlington. I was 33 when I had her so she really doesn't have any friends her age other than day care because all of my friends have older kids. I too, am not christian and know where you are coming from.

I know how you feel...I have been here for 6 years and I still get looks when I say that I don't go to church. I am a pretty tolerant person, but I don't like it when my beliefs (or nonbeliefs) are held against me.
My son turned 2 in December and we are always looking for playmates. We live in South Arlington, but I am always willing to drive to have a fun time for both me and my son.

I know how you feel. I have a 4 month old daughter, and not a Christian.... 95% of people I get around drive me crazy.

I am very accepting of other people's religions, but I don't like to have their beliefs shoved down my throat.

Hi J., it looks like you have a possible play-group in the making. I am new to the DFW area and have been trying to find a playgroup or some kind of social interaction for my daughter (she turns two May 12). I too consider myself semi-liberal and open-minded and would like to expand my social circle as well as my daughter's. Let me know what your plans are.

Hi J.,

I too am a semi-liberal minded person here in the area. I live in North Richland Hills with my husband, 4 year old daughter and 7 month old son. Like you, I am also non-christian, or anything else for that matter. I know that my kids are not quite in the same ages groups, but would love to meet you. My daughter plays well with just about anyone, and I wouldn't mind the company of a like minded adult. Let me know if you want to get together sometime, and we'll see what we can arrange.

Hi J....

What area of town do you live in? When I put in requests on here I always forget to tell people that as well. I am in Plano off of the Tollway. I have a 27 month old little boy who is so smart and I am just getting ready to put him in a Montessori school a few days a week for interaction and so I have a little time to do things. K. & Rhys

Hi! Where do you live? My family and I are moving to Keller soon from CA and I worry about finding friends too that are similar to us. My husband is an active duty marine (he'll stay in California after his deployment), I am 40 with a 4 year old and a 21 month old boy. We don't go to church either and my husband and I have a few tattoos (he more than I). Anyway, just wanted to respond to your e-mail. I've never used this forum before but it seems helpful for certain things.
Take care,
C.
