Looking for a Great Baby Carrier

My son is six months old and I'm looking for a comfortable and hopefully affordable baby carrier. We have the Bjorn but both my husband and I find it very uncomfortable (perhaps because we are both under 5'5"?). I like the ones that can be worn on the back or front but I don't know what brand is best. Any help would be appreciated!

What can I do next?

Thanks everyone for your responses. I ended up getting the Ergo and it's great! So far, I've only worn my son in the front position and he loves it. Yes it's pricey but its really worth it. He's comfortable and I'm comfortable. Phew!

Dear D.,
Greetings!!!

There is a phenomenal BABYWEARING group here in L.A. called KOALA L.A. led by the very AMAZING Traci Cummings. Her monthly meetings are incredible, and she offers a BABYWEARING LENDING LIBRARY where you can borrow slings/ wraps to try for yourself. Her # is: (213) 300~8275. She is truly a BABYWEARING ADVOCATE and all her help is free!!! : ))) I highly recommend calling her! : )))

If you or someone you know can sew, there are some great patterns on the web for various carriers (http://www.mammasmilk.com/pages/makeyourown.php).

Unfortunately, the structured kind are kind of expensive. I am very small, too, and have found the most comfortable brand to be the Beco carriers (http://www.becobabycarrier.com/). Becos come in beautiful patterns, too. The Ergo was way too bulky for me, though it is a wonderful carrier.

I love my Ergo.

I can carry my daughter in the front or on my back. I am only 5'3" and find it very comfortable. I also have chronic back problems but my back never bothers me when I wear it. It does a great job distributing your childs weight.

Good Luck!

I know this site can be overwhelming (so much great information), but try

Some of the brands for wearing your baby in front or back are the Ergo and the Patapum. They are similar structured carriers with the Ergo being the more expensive of the two. There are a few other brands as well. Some people like mei tai type carriers. Try ebay or the site above to get one used.

I can not rave enough about the Ergo! I purchased the infant insert and was glad I did-- my baby was 6 pds 11 ounces at birth and dropped weight to 5 pds 11 ounces. She loved to snuggle in the Ergo and would fall asleep easily. Now that she is 10 months, when she sees me pick it up, she gets excited- awaiting a new adventure (even if it is just walking around the house doing chores!). My husband liked it too. It is very comfortable and once you get used to all the positions, it can be great for long and short outings.
