Has anyone ever tried this? I (and my daughter) have seen the commercial for this on TV. She absolutely LOVES outdoors & bugs & animals, etc, so I think she would definitely love something like this!

You buy the kit, they send you a jar of caterpillars & food, a mesh butterfly house & other stuff. You get to watch the caterpillars build their cocoons & change into butterflies!

If you have tried this, did you like it? Did at least most of them live & become butterflies?

I was thinking of getting my daughter one for our house, and also giving one to her preschool classroom (with her teacher's permission). The kids would love it!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all of the responses!!! I was looking at livebutterflygarden.com (the one I've seen in the commercial), but it's $20 for the kit, and another $10 for shipping! Not sure how that compares to other places, but I figure I'm going to shop around for other options! I'm going to ask my daughter's teacher today if it will be ok for me to get them one in a few weeks.

My son's K- teacher bought one for the classroom, and he came home so excited about the butterfly stories he wanted to tell me. I don't know how many lived, but he loved it! I say go for it!

We had one when my dd was 3. She was too young to appreciate it fully, but we did check it every day and she got to release beautiful butterflies in her grandma's garden. For years we saw the same butterflies in that garden. I love these things and I'm always telling myself to get another!

My son's preschool class just did this...it was his absolute favorite thing about school during the time they were developing. He couldn't wait to see if they changed yet, etc. They got like 8 butterflies and then released them, all of the kids LOVED it.

This product is great. We bought one on amazon. When we ordered the caterpillars they were left in our hot AZ mailbox for a day or two and I was really worried they were dead. However, they did great and all 10 turned into chrysalis' and then butterflies. We just released them this morning . The butterflies crawled onto our 3 daughters' fingers and sat there for a little while before flying away. Our 3 daughters were enthralled.

Yes I LOVED it! I got one for my daughter when she was 5 and the butterflies were amazing! We loved it so much we bought another one for her Kindergarten class and again it was totally successful. Releasing the butterflies was so beautiful! Plus, my daughter did it on her own (with a little help from me) and it really taught her responsiblity with taking care of them.

Get one! You and your daughter will absolutely love it!

We had one, it was great! It was interesting and fun. All our butterflies lived and the kids loved letting them go in our garden and it was fun to see them sitting on our flowers throughout the summer. You can get the kit on the internet, just google butterfly garden and you will find the site, there are lots of other critters that you can raise. We also bought the tadpoles and watched them turn into African water frogs. The frogs are 2 years old now. Watching a tadpole turn into a frog is very cool.

I have done this two years in a row with my kindergarten class (the second year we just re-used the mesh container after washing it and ordered just caterpillars). Both times all five of our caterpillars turned to butterflies, even one that fell off the net while a chrysalis and one that was MUCH smaller than the others. I was convinced it hadn't made it, but it did. My kids LOVED this activity!

They have them at Toys R Us. That is where we got ours. All of the caterpillars we got lived and turned into butterflies. My daughter loved it. She watched them and fed them for a while and then we let them go.

We're doing 1 right now! I bought it at Toysrus and it took 2-3 weeks to get the 5 caterpillars. It came with a neat DVD too. My 4 year-old LOVES it. The caterpillars are doubling in size every day, so it's easy to see them grow. You can re-use your "house" and just send away for more caterpillars too! SO much fun.

We had one last summer and the kids loved it! It was really cool. We ended up with four butterflies that we released during the summer. The kids enjoyed watching the whole process from caterpillar to butterfly. Definitely worth getting.

I am a preschool teacher. We currently have a butterfly house in my room. The children love it. Most in the past have lived. If most of them do died, the company will send us a new one (but we have never had a problem).
