Landlord Breaking Lease

My husband and I are in a year lease on our house. We have lived there for two months. Today the landlord calls and says she is in a relocation program and we have two options buy the house or move out. The house would be sold back to the relocation company. She said she would give us our deposit back but I don't think that is enough. I really don't know if it is legal. Didn't know if anyone had ever had a similar situation?

What can I do next?

I am a landlord who leases a home. There is a written contract called a lease agreement.
Read your lease carefully. There should be something in it that talks about terminating the lease.
Mine for example says that in the event I wish to sell my home, I can...it's my home, but I have to give my tenants 60 days WRITTEN NOTICE. In other words, a phone call is no proof of anything. It's her word against yours.
If it was me, I would contact an attorney and give him/her a copy of your signed lease agreement.
If there is nothing in it about the owner's right to sell the property, I think the landlord is just blowing hot air. A contract is just that...a contract. It is binding and she has to follow it exactly as it is drafted, just like you do.

Hope this helps...

Hello, my partner and I are property managers in Houston. And this may not be legal. If your in a contract, when the property is sold, the lease should go with it, unless it is forclosed on. You may want to read your lease, make sure it is valid and check for any clauses that may change this. Let me know if you have any questions.

Do you have a valid , written lease agreement? A lease is a legally binding agreement. Breaking a lease constitutes breaking a contract. I would read your lease and see if there are any clauses in it that allow the landlord to break the lease. You may need to consult an attorney.

I'd be seeking legal advice. You signed a lease, no? Then the landlord is obligated to that lease.
Definitely seek advice...sounds to me like you're being bullied.
