Ok......I have been pregnant a few times before with only one successful pregnancy.....(4 yr old son). I have miscarried a couple of times and I was wondering why! I was going to a Dr who who would tell me it was stress related (I was stressing a lot) and I just needed to relax and be happy. I changed Doctor's-- which I should have done a year ago, but anyway she sent me to the lab to have blood drawn to see if there were any medicals reasons why I had a hard time staying pregnant. Come to find out, there were two things wrong....1) High Anticardiolithin antibodies (IGM) which can be controlled by taking one baby aspirin a day and 2) MTHFR (Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) is a rare genetic defect that can lead to complications in pregnancy. Many people do not know that they have this defective gene until after they have had several unsuccessful pregnancies. Others may carry one pregnancy to term and not discover until afterwards that they carry the defect). The doctor wants me to come in to check my homocysteine level and if it is not normal she will start me on a medication and clomid to help me become pregnant. I am kind of nervous about becoming pregnant again not only b/c i can miscarry but I read that: (Because of a mother with MTHFR’s inability to efficiently metabolize folic acid and vitamin B9, the disorder has been linked to a variety of pregnancy complications such as chromosomal abnormalities, such as Down syndrome, and congenital malformations). I want to more kids but I do not want to take the risk of having unhealthy kids. Has anyone else had these issues and what were your end results.....PLEASE help me..........
If you decide pregnancy is not wise, there are plenty of children waiting in the USA to be adopted. AF
What a difficult situation to be in. It does sound like you plate is very full with work, school, child, wedding. Is this the right time for your family? Really think about the reasons for having another child. Way your reasons and your risks. There are other options if you want more children but feel the risks are to many to try to carry your own again. Have you considered adoption? I wish you the best of luck.
Wow, I can't believe this. My ex mother in law, not only had MTHFR, but several other genetic blood disorders, including Factor 5. My ex husband was born with a cleft lip that was attributed to my MIL's consumption of valium back then, but reading this, it could have been the MTHFR. Anyway, I don't know if this helps, but my ex husband and I had been to a geneticist when I became pregnant with my son(about to turn 3). My pregnancy went fine, and mu son was born perfectly healthy. I had asked his pediatrician about testing for the series of genetic diseases that his paternal grandmother had, and even after a second opinion, was told that basically it would do more harm than good, unless there were problems to begin testing(worrying). So, I know that this is a pretty rare thing, just wanted to let you know that I am one person that MTHFR did not have any negative effect on my pregnancy or my son.
what a lovely time to share my testimony after all i have been through trying to get back my family together now i know that spell really work for does that have faith because i have work with many spell caster and i was not having faith on them that they will be able to help me and after everything i did not see the result. But when i find Dr.Deva he told me that the problem that i am having that is making me not to have a good result is that i do not have faith that i can get the result so he advice me to faith and which i did and after two day after the casting of the spell i started seeing result my husband that was away from home for almost one year came back home and my son who has been arrested was release i just still see everything as if i am still dreaming. Im sorry to hear about your issues and that you have had miscarriages. I had my first one last month after 3 successful pregnancies and birth. Talk about confused as to why????
I do not have the issues you speak of or know about them, but I just wanted to ask you: If you do become pregnant, arent there medications/treatments to help you carry your pregnancy successfully AND that will combat your issue and give you a perfectly formed and healthy child?

certain that it had nothing to do with anything you did, or
didnt do. next thing to do, is to decide whether you want to continue trying to get pregnant, then act accordingly. you have one beautiful baby already, right. next realize that doctors dont always know everything, three different doctors all told me that i was clinically sterile, that i would never get pregnant. twenty years later, we gave birth to a healthy, beautiful little girl, two months premature in our apartment bathroom

I'm not sure I have a lot to offer, more than empathy! I have one child (four yr. old son), have miscarried twice now, and due to my age (just turned 42) we did have some testing and my doctor came back with the somewhat unsatisfying conclusion that I have trouble "metabolizing folic acid," but didn't use the term MTHFR.
My son has a balanced translocation -- in other words, some genetic material rearranges itself. If important DNA is lost, then you have problems, but if it is "balanced," the outcome is a normal child who will have some issues in having kids, but is otherwise unaffected.
I guess what I'm saying is maybe I do have and have had this difficulty with folic acid, and I have a super intelligent, gorgeous child, and am not hesitating to try again, even with age, miscarriages etc . against me.

I have MTHFR as well. Took a baby aspirin a day during pregnancy and have a beautiful, perfectly healthy girl. I say "Go for it." Any time you get pregnant you risk having a child with any type of problem, even if you don't have MTHFR.
Well folic acid is VERY important, and having the increased risk of a child with problems is definately something to consider. There are some major and dehabilitating birth defects that are caused by the lack of these vitamins. However, before I started worrying about this though I would discuss it with your DR. Depending on where the breakdown in your system is you may be able to get weekly or monthly shots of both Folic acid or B9 that would alleviate this risk (or to get these nutrients in some other form that your body can use).
Otherwise I would question why you need clomid if you do not have trouble getting pregnant. Clomid would not help you stay pregnant, it will just make it more likely for you to have multiples (which I would think would be more risky with a vitamin deficiency). Definately do NOT take clomid unless you are going to be monitored by ultrasound to see how many eggs you are making - thats how high order multiples happen.

I have the same genetic thing MTHFR. I guess I kinda lucked out I haev 3 children and did not have any miscarriages. I did have to take baby aspirin while pregnant but that was it. I had a friend that has the same thing that went through a couple of miscarriages before being diagnosed. She had to have injections everyday during her pregnancies (2 healthy children) I say get a new OBGYN that listens to you. If you are in the Columbia area I would suggest Kimberly Moran Turner. She is excellent a solo practitioner but well worth it! She listens to everything you say very patient focused. Its also sooo much better than a huge practice (I went through with my 2nd) They don't pay attention to your individual needs as much. Best of luck!
