Hi everone!

I wanted to get your input. I have to take the prescription generic allegra for my allergies. Which are mostly strong all year round, except during the summer is not that bad, I don't take the pill the first 7 months every day, just maybe 1 once a week or so, depends, cause suppously i'm allergic to dogs (which i have one), dust, some trees, etc. not too food! but my ins plan has changed this year, so I can't buy my medicines like I used to. If i do I have to pay retail price, which I can't. I'm still taking the ones I had left that I ordered before 2010 ended. So, I wanted to know if the Allegra over the counter is as good as it advertised. Is it almost the same as taking the prescribed Allegra or generic brand??? does it help for people that have my type of allergies?

you may say why don't i go to the doctor and ask.....well, if I could I would....but as I said before my insurance plan has changed and I have to pay out of my pocket till I reach $ 3,500 of my deductible so it can cover me 80% ...yup it sucks!!! what I had last year before the changes was great! but know I'm screwed! so can you help me please! thank you!

it's the same drug as rx allegra - most of the allergy drugs go otc when their patents run out. and with med questions, go talk to the pharmacist, they are more knowledgable about the med speicific questions anyways, and you don't have to pay for an office visit!

All allergy meds are OTC now... however, I'm able to get an RX for my daughters zyrtec (liquid) so her insurance covers it :)

Allergy meds take a while to take effect; your body has to get used to it. For the allergies you described, I'd try Claritin once a day for a good 3 to 4 weeks and see if you notice a difference.

I'm not a doc or a pharmacist, but I worked in a pharmacy for years and that's what was always recommended to customers :)

By law any generic must be the same formula as the brand name. Sometime, but rarely, you may get an interaction because of the different fillers used.

I take Allegra every day. I used to take generic Allergra but once the OTC was approved, my prescription plan no longer pays for it.

The regular brand Allegra works great. So does the generic over the counter. I am able to buy the real Allegra at BJs for a really good price. So I suggest that you check out your local Sams, Costco or BJs. Then Wallmart (their drugs are cheaper). And I suggest going with the OTC generic - it's all the same.

BTW - you should take your pill every day. You need to build it up in your system.

what you get over the counter should be the same as the generic - you could look at the manufacturer and it might even be the same. If you are taking brand name OTC allegra, it should be the same as what was once brand name prescription allegra.

Also - I might be wrong but I thought allergy drugs like Allegra need to be taken everyday to be effective? I didnt have much relief from Allegra and do better on Zyrtec personally. My main allergies are cats and dust and flower pollen

I use the otc allegra and it works great. I have taken both the name brand and generic. For whatever reason I don't seem to have quite as good luck with the generic which I thought was odd because I use almost all generic meds. If I can afford the regular allegra I buy it, but if not, the generic is close so I will use it. You should have good luck with either one.
