iPhone Owners - What Does Basic Service Look Like?

With AT&T or Verizon (or whatever their added provider is), without any apps or extra bells and whistles? I have an opportunity to get an iPhone on sale, and would love to get rid of my iPod, digital camera and video camera when I go on vacation. I would probably use my iPhone mostly for texting but do I HAVE to get internet service on my iPhone?

Thanks in advance!

We have iphones with AT&T. In additon to the 'basic' plan, it costs 20 dollars for unlimited text (5 dollars for 200 texts) and 30 dollars for internet (and you cannot have iphone service WITHOUT the internet), so you are looking at $30 'extra' per phone non-negotible and $20 'extra' per phone for unlimited text.

Yes, you have to get internet. (You don't want an iPhone without one, there would be no point.) I have unlimited talk, unlimited text on mine and it's around $120/month. However, AT&T recently (in the last few weeks) introduced a plan where you can have unlimited mobile-to-mobile (not just AT&T cell phones, but any cell phone), with 700 minutes per month mobile-to-land line, for about $50 less. So I will be switching to that. Honestly, once you have an iPhone, you'll wonder how you ever lived without it. Like all other Apple products, it works fantastically well, is seamlessly integrated, and makes your life so much easier.

I will second the LG Optimus V. My son just got one and we pay $25 per month for 300 min, unlimited data and unlimited text. As soon as I get the money I will be getting one. I've played around on his and really like it. I will go with the $40 per month plan with 1200 min, unlimited text, and unlimited data. Virgin uses the Sprint network and he hasn't had any dropped calls. Lots of apps also with the Android platform. I have really looked at AT & T plans but the cheapest (even with a family plan) would be $80 per month per line. I just can't afford that !

If you go with Verizon and you have a smart phone, you have to pay for web service. So that adds $29.99 per smart phone to your bill each month. It includes all your texting though.

I don't have an iphone but I have had Verizon for years. They told me this was true when I had both my Blackberry and now my Droid X, regardless of if you bought the phone from them or not. It's just how their phones integrate with their network.

Hope that helps. Make sure the iphone you are looking at getting is compatible with Verizon before you get it (if you are going to go with Verizon). Just because it's an iphone does not mean that it'll work on Verizon's network...they use a different kind of signal than other companies.

When you buy one at the ATT or Verizon store, they will require you buy a data package. With ATT I have the lowest one because I don't use a lot of data AND if you have access to wireless, you can use it instead. My data package is $15 per month. At home and work (where I am most of the time) I can connect to wireless.

My son has an old Iphone that was given to him, we put his sim card in it from his prepaid phone. He is able to use it as a phone and Ipod without the data plan. He can connect to wireless at home. They told me at the store it won't work without the data plan, but on the older model it does at least.

My husband has it with Verizon and he paid $199 when it first came out for the phone, and pays an additional $30 a month for the service. Yes, you have to pay for the data plan with Verizon, that is why I don't have one. Most of the apps he has on his phone are free or have a one time fee. The camera is nice, but we still bring our regular camera.

i know that your looking at the iphone, but i have the lg optimus v. it's specs are equal to that with the iphone 3gs. the screen is smaller, but everything else is the same. it has the android market. it accesses the internet, etc. i paid $149 for the phone with Virgin Mobile. and i pay only $25/mo for 300 anytime minutes, unlimited text, and unlimited data. i love it. my SIL has an iphone and she pays extra for texting like $15-20/mo and also has to pay for a data plan which i want to say is $30 for the lowest you can go, and it's not unlimited. i shopped around and on average, a person is paying $75/mo for text, talk and data. mine was by far the cheapest.
