i just have to ask, and please don't take this the wrong way - i would LOVE to be in a job where things were relaxed enough for me to play on the internet througout the day. well...maybe lol. i don't know. but i work in an office, i am a team leader, and first off, i simlpy don't have TIME to play. i work very hard every day, i do the best job i can. i wouldn't know what to do if i stopped and got online. if i did, i'd feel SUPER guilty. not only that, but there are such things as viruses and spam, and OMG what if something came through because of me? we all know they can tell which computer/user it came from. i would be MORTIFIED. last, it has happened a few times, and people get fired. period. and i know some people in our office STILL do it. but to me it is just a stupid unnecessary risk (especially since i can walk right to the breakroom and use my phone to get online at any time). i guess from what i understand many companies don't have the same policies mine do. but i'm curious from the employee's perspective....because i know it happens. it doesn't worry you? you don't feel guilty? afraid you'll get fired if something happens??
i have only worked 2 jobs that involved sitting at computers, since the internet existed, and both jobs were VERY anti-internet. are there companies that are lax about it, or all all the people getting online at work really endangering their jobs? just curious mamas....what do you think?

thanks for the responses. i guess i should have said, everyone is kept to a really strict schedule for breaks - we all take them, we all take the same amount. there's no difference between smokers vs nonsmokers, and we all leave the area. we do data entry, so there is very little bs time. however, i know that people in other departments, shop, read E! online, whatever the case may be...company policy is NO internet use unless it is for business. i feel like someone said, i am using their computers, therefore they have a right to dictate how it is used. i will keep using my phone during breaks :) but it's good to know ya'll are safe lol. enjoy!
I'm pretty certain NO employer would be happy catching their employees diddling online during working hours. It's not part of professional "multi tasking". However, I do do it on occasion too because I can get away with it, or at least I have so far... and I think that's why people do it. If I got fired for having mamapedia up at work, I wouldnt argue about it... I'd clear my desk peacefully while calling my self a dumbass.
My personal laptop with broadband sits under my desk connected with a KVM switch. :p I don't smoke (some of our smokers spend 15 minutes of every hour smoking, I don't gossip (don't get me started on that one) so ya know, if I want to take a break and do something on the internet then that is my break!
The internet at work is NOT mine to use as a I wish. It's there as a tool. However, it all depends upon what you do and what your company does.
If I want to play games - then I don't do that on company time. If I've got time to play games - I'm obviously not a trusted employee or else I would be busy!!! :) However, I admit - I'd make time for MAMAPEDIA!!! (DOH!)
I know when I was a receptionist a LONG time ago - we were allowed to play games like solitaire as long as the phone got answered...I didn't like that and asked to edit and type while I was up there...But that's ME!!
There are many today who think nothing of using the internet wherever they are...it's their "right" and they get pissed when the company tells them their services are no longer required....because they were not using the company tools properly....I had one job, as a recruiter, where they monitored ALL of my computer time/stuff...thank God I didn't mess around! :)
I know that when I worked in a business that supported a network connection company I would often be on the phone with someone who had to dismantle their computer network so they could reboot and make a connection. I would sit there bored out of my mine waiting on them to pick the phone up again or wait for their computer to reboot...OMG I would be bored.
I often played computer games while waiting. I could not really be on the internet due to in filling up the servers. It was one of those silly things I would do so I didn't pull my hair out and run around screaming...lol.
It really depends on the company.
I've worked at companies where if I had free time, which I did since I've always been a fast worker and the work was dependent on customers calling/emailing us, I could get on the internet of even play computer games I brought from home. I've also worked at companies where you really weren't encouraged at all to get on the internet no matter how little work you had (that place tended to be feast or famine when it came to work). Some just limit the sites you can get on, some don't.
I work at a big package delivery company, and they frown on it big time, and only give access to us folks who need to check the weather, for our deliveries. Or we can get on mapquest too.
I'm currently AT work as I type this. Not on break. However, I've finished ALL of my daily duties, bugged the boss for MORE work and asked all of my co-workers if they need help with anything. After getting "No" from everyone, I am online. Do I worry about them finding out? No. I am the only employee in my area that does all of my work and asks for extra. If they don't have enough to keep me busy, I will keep myself busy. :)
