Information on Seborrhea
Hello! My 6 week old son developed what looked like baby acne on Monday. Tuesday a few of the spots looked worse and on Wednesday it had developed into what looked like a rash and had spread to his ears, behind his ears and his forehead. I took him to his pediatrician and she said that it was seborrhea and to use selson blue to wash his hair and face, just once a day in his bath. I have been doing this for a couple of days now, but it doesn't look any better. I feel so bad for him... he looks horrible! I'm just wondering if anyone has experience with this or any other ideas how to treat it. I can't seem to locate a ton of information on it. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hey -
My son had this as well. It was only on his head though and they also told me to use Selson Blue. unfortunately, nothing really worked. I started shaving his head and I think getting "air" to it helped some. But honestly, I dealt with it for 3-4 years before it got better.
But, the Eucerin does help. Also Cetaphil. But, none of it makes it go away.

Was your baby just vaccinated? It could be a reaction to a vaccination. My son developed a rash like that after a vaccination and my doc kept telling me it was nothing. We finally went to a homeopath and cleared it up.

HI M.,
My son, who is now almost 4, also had that. My doctor said it was a very normal occurance and advised that I just wash his hand and face with a warm wash cloth periodically through out the day. It was interesting becuase my daughter, now almost 3, did not get it quite as bad as my son. Don't worry, it will pass in a few weeks! Just keep his face clean.

I am of the natural approach/find the cause camp. If you are nursing, consider what you are eating (milk/dairy most likely culprit). All three of my kids didn't tolerate milk well, but I didn't figure that out too early until my 3rd and it made a HUGE difference in skin, wheezing and overall health. Make sure to avoid using products with dyes and perfumes and definitely consider if it can be linked to a recent vaccine. On that note, you can choose to postpone vaccines when your child is not in good health, or their immune system is already busy fighting something.
I hope he gets better soon! Follow your gut - you're usually right.

Hi M.:
My baby also had it. My doc recommended Eucerin. I really held back using it for awhile b/c it looked so greasy, I thought it would make it worse.
It didn't! When I finally gave it, it worked beautifully.
Good luck with you and your sweet little baby!

I not a doctor of course but it sounds like the normal baby " acne" to me. It can look pretty bad or be mild. Two of my kids had it worse than the first. My son was so awful I still cringe to look at his pictures. They get over it. Seems the best thing to do is not put any special lotion etc on them and for sure don't mess with the spots.

I have seborrhea dermitis. I have it in my scalp and around and inside my ears. I've always been told to use selson blue/t-gel/head and shoulders shampoo. I even been prescribed a stronger solution of those types of shampoos. They have never worked very well. My current Dr. told me to use cortisone for my ears and around my hairline. He is treating it like a fungus which I've never had a Dr. treat it like that before. He prescribed clotrimazole in liquid solution which is basically Lotrimin. Both the cortisone and lotrimin have worked very well. I am very happy with the results. I would say if the shampoo is not working for your baby-call your pedi and see what other options you have.

M.,
My mom and I both have it (I am 40) although it didn't show up until I was a teenager. I have a prescribed drug that I rub on that works instantly but it may be completely inappropriate for an infant. It is fluocinolone acetonide solution or synalar. the seborrhea comes up very rarely for me now and when it does it is only on the back of my scalp (so no one knows but me) I put the synalar on before bed and I am fine when I wake up-I remember more frequent occurrences when in college and when starting my first job. My Mom's sometimes manifests itself on her eyelids and where her ear attaches to the head (a bit more painful). It is irritating but not horribly painful so don't stress about that. If you want to call me, message me and I will send my #. good luck.

I am not familiar with that term; however, my first had bad cradle cap and baby acne. For the cradle cap I bought some baby cradle cap shampoo and rubbed it on her head. Then I got a soft brush and brushed her scalp in circle motions to get the scales off. Worked like a charm and was gone after a few days of doing this. I never had to use Selson Blue even though it was recommended. Not sure if this is the same thing or not. For the baby acne, I just washed her face very often - a couple times a day with baby soap and it went away after a few days as well. I would assume that the rash is from the milk. I would try washing with mild soap on forehead, behind ears and face very often - after every feeding. I would suspect you will see a huge difference after a few days of doing this consistently.
