Infant Vitamin Recommendation

We use Enfamil Poly-Vi-Sol multivitamin for infants and my 8 mo old son HATES it. (My daughter had the same problem as a baby). My son will spit it out every time I give it to him, can't say I blame him if it tastes anything like it smells. Has anyone had success with a different vitamin drop? I've tried mixing it in with his fruit and/or cereal, but he spits that all out too. Thanks!

What can I do next?

I always mixed it with my daughter's breast milk and/or formula. I never had any problems that way, since it was more diluted.

i give that to my twins they won't touch it straight but don't seem to mind at all if it's in formula or a tiny bit of undiluted juice

You might try Tri-Vi-Sol. I seem to recall that it isn't nearly as nasty smelling (which probably means nasty tasting!) as the Poly-Vi-Sol. I mixed it with applesauce and managed to get my daughter to take it that way. I'm guessing that you're breastfeeding which is why the pediatrician suggested vitamins? Now that your little guy is eating some solids, you might be able to eliminate the vitamins, but I would check with the doc first.

Does he need to take vitamins? My ped. never suggested vitamins for my kids. Even now he says it's not something that is needed due to the fact that most kids can't stand them and they aren't worth the effort. As long as he is eating a decently balanced diet (and at 8m. he is still on formula???) he really doesn't need vitamins - in my opinion. But it's just my opinion and what my dr. had to say - all dr's are different of course!! And if your's recommend vitamins maybe he/she will know of better tasting ones?!

Hope that helps!!

I think he may not need the vitamins anymore if he's eating table food? If I remember correctly, it's only for breastfed babies who are missing some vitamins because of breastmilk. Maybe ask your doctor if you can stop the vitamins?

Hi J.,

My pediatrician gave us a sample of Kidz Iron (I think that's how it's spelled), because my DD hated the Poly-Vi-Sol. Well, she did not have a problem with the Kidz Iron. She never spit it out! The only problem is that I have been unable to find it in the stores where we live, but maybe they have them by you. Ask your ped for a sample so you can see if your son will tolerate it. Good Luck!

Check with your pharmacist to see if they can add flavor (just like they would to any other medication)--they've done it for me for over the counter iron drops I was giving my daughter. The iron drops didn't smell nearly as bad as the polyvisol, but it's worth a try!

The only way that our son will take those vitamins is if we divide them up in the bottles he takes within 24 hours. So we figured out that if he takes 8 bottles that he gets 3 drops per bottle. That way it isn't too strong for him to taste and possibly spit out. It equals out to the amount that is in the dropper. I hope this idea helps!!! Good luck!!

I tasted the baby vitamins once, they were horrid, which explained why my children spit them out on me!!!
Most really young children do not require vitamins because they get a pretty healthy balance of foods in the meals we give them.
There are a lot of different choices today, thank goodness, and the people at the pharmacy are great at being able to suggest a replacement that won't be as nasty!
Talk to your pharamasist. They will have a suggestion.

Is he breastfed? If not, you can put it in his cup. That's what I've done with my son since he was about that age. It's a good trick. ;)
If he spits it out, I'd mix it better. Add some baby yogurt or something to dilute the taste of vitamins.

Did your ped recommend vitamins? If not, I wouldn't worry about it at all. None of my kids ever needed vitamins as babies. When I asked our doctors about it (we've had several due to moves) and all of them said vitamins weren't needed - just the drug companies trying to make money on parents' fears. As long as you offer a wide variety of healthy foods, they get everything they need through food and formula and/or breastmilk. Your son is only a month younger than my youngest so I'll assume he's eating like her (and what she was eating a month ago). She eats a wide variety of food each day... cereals like Mighty Bites and Cheerios, all types of fresh fruit like bananas, pears, strawberries, blueberries, etc, pasta, bread/toast, eggs, alot of veggies like corn, peas, green beans, carrots and dairy stuff like yogurt and cheese. I just put a variety of things on her tray and she picks up and eats what she wants with her fingers (except yogurt, of course!). She may not eat a balanced variety each day but over the course of a week it evens out. That's the key about kids.... if you offer a wide variety of healthy foods they'll eat what their bodies needs but you may have to look at it over a week instead of a day.
In most cases, vitamins are not needed for babies but there are times when docs recommend them. So just ask your doc and ask what he/she thinks.

We used the Poly-Vi-Sol at first with my son, and he hated it. I tried mixing it up in his cereal and although he took it better, he still knew something wasn't right with his cereal...LOL. I ended up finding Gerber Vitamin Drops that are fruit flavored and he takes them much better. They don't smell near as nasty as the Poly-Vi-Sol does. I found them in the baby section of my store, not the vitamin section. Hope that helps!!

Eww! My son spit it out too. I tasted it and it really is awful tasting. It smells like metal (has iron). I had instant success with the Gerber vitamin drops. It has more flavor. It's next to Enfamil in the vitamins aisle. Hope these work for you as well. Good luck!

I gave my daughter those every morning with her breakfast. However with my daughter she gets juice for breakfast and no other time during the day. So I just mixed the vitamins in with her juice and she never knew the difference. She never liked it in her ceral or anything either.

I started giving my daughter vitamins early on. The doctor never suggested them but I know that not all of the baby food that you buy has as many vitamins as they used to have when our parents/grandparents were growing up and/or feeding their kids. Organic is of course better for you since there are less chemicals but our soil no longer is vitamin rich as it used to be. I also do not give my daughter milk to drink so I give her vitamins to replace that. (You really don't assimilate the calcium in the milk as much as they want you to think... you need lots of vitamin D to really assimilate the calcium. Also they give the cattle hormones to make them produce more milk and that hormone is not good for the human body.)

Giving your child vitamins is not a bad idea with the low nutrient content of todays food. I read somewhere that generations ago it was possible to get all of your nutriments and vitamins from just the food you ate but in todays world with all the chemicals added to things and the pollution is is very hard to get nearly as many nutriments and vitamins. I give my daughter vitamins daily because I'd rather be safe than sorry.

I wish you luck!
