I was told that I need to have my infant carseat checked before I go into labor to make sure that it is installed right. Does anyone know of a place that I can go locally in Commerce Twp or really a 30mile radius where I could make sure I'm all set? I can't seem to find anything online and the rumor is the hospital won't let you leave with the baby if its not correct?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for the information on where to get my car seat checked. I tried several of your sources and some people were on vacation and some never called me back but eventually I was lead to the West Bloomfield Police Department and yesterday I got my seat checked! I'm glad it worked out because my seat wasn't in tight enough and there was so much additional details that I would've never even thought of checking etc. Thanks again, I'm not sure this would've worked out without your assistance!

Oakland Couty has an office at 1010 Maple Rd- in Walled Lake. Check out this website or call one of the numbers for a site that they are doing seat checks.

We were on our own once we left our room! But they do say to not use a lot of blankets, bulky clothes, jackets, etc. in the seat. Once they are buckled in, then cover/ snuggle them up! -Which is easier when they are born than when they are running around!
Good luck!

hello K., my name is K., that is just a rumor. you don't have to have it looked at. the hospital just wants to make sure you have an infant carrier for your baby. but if it make you feel better to have it checked out, you could probably call your local fire dept. and go there to make sure everything is installed correctly. i hope this info has helped you out. good luck in the weeks to come.

Hi K.,
check with your local police or fire dept. If they don't do seat checks they would no where you can go to have it done. Also you might want to check with the hospital many also have "parenting classes" that cover car seat safety.

I remember this nightmare. I live in Northville and called every police and fire department in our local area and very few will do a seat check. Most say it's no longer in the budget to keep someone certified. And those that will do it, will only do it for their own residents. A few AAA offices will do it, but only a few times a year. (This was all in 2007.) We finally had ours checked at the Plymouth Township police department on Haggerty north of Ann Arbor Rd. You can contact Officer Jamie Senkbiel @ ###-###-#### to see if they have any dates coming up. If not, she may have a suggestion where you can get it done quickly. You can also check http://www.seatcheck.org/ but that's the original place we started and didn't have much luck. It's obviously up to you, but I would highly recommend having the installation checked -- I don't know a single person who didn't need adjustments when their seat was checked. Our hospital didn't look at the seat -- but to me, it's just not worth the risk to skip it. Best wishes to you and good luck!

I'm pretty sure you can take a car seat to the fire department and they can check it for you and make sure you are installing it properly. We have that newer station on Commerce Rd.

Hello-
I knew how to install my carseat but went to the Fire Station anyways just to be safe...and he installed it wrong!!! I would read the instructions and go to Babies r us and they have a van seat in the store and ask them how to install. What type of carseat are you trying to install?? Be careful!!

Call the Novi police department and make an appointment for a seat check. The officer who does it has a big book of photos of all the babies he's installed the seats for. He was very nice and gave us great tips for car seat safety that nobody else told us. Congrats on your new baby.

I believe that most police stations, and fire departments will check your car seat. I know that there are often days that they a lot at a time (most "baby fairs" will have a check). I would call your fire department and ask them if they do checks, they can probably refer to someone if they don't.

That being said, my hospital walked us out and stood around (I think to make sure that the baby was put in a rear facing seat), but they didn't actually touch anything or get in the car. They did offer to put the baby in for us(well for my husband). I don't think they really have any right to get in your car or touch anything if you decline the help. Just say no thank you. Anyway, I am sure that they would just put it in properly if it was in wrong.

West Bloomfield police just had a check, perhaps they could advise you. Also, call AAA, they have a schedule of these events, as do the State Police.

Farmington Hills fire department usually will do it. You need to call and make an appointment though. It also depends on the hospital. I just had a baby in October, Providence in southfield. They basically dropped me off at the car and were gone before we even opend the door. Congratulations on the upcoming birth of your baby.
