In Need of New Washer/dyer

Hey Momma's! You guys are such a great help with everything. I ask around, but this is the best place to get it in printed ink from personal experience!
I need a new washer and dryer...this morning my washer stopped spinning and it has taken my dryer 4 attempts to dry the towels that were in the washer. The washer has worked alright the rest of the day...and the dryer could be fine, as those towels were SUPER wet. Both of these are an unknown age. They were passed to me from an aunt and uncle I'm not close to. I know they had them in their trailer for at least 10 years and am sure they were not new when they were put in the trailer.
I have been looking at washer/dryers online for sometime. I am thinking I want a front loader. I was looking at used from like sears outlet or recker and berger stores. My dad tonight said I could get them at a discounted rate through his work but it would have to be ones they offer which are Maytag Preformance or Epic and Whirlpool Duet for front loaders. Do any of you have any opinions about any of the above?

What can I do next?

I just bought a Whirlpool Cabrio washer last month. I had a front loading Frigidaire for 6 years until it konked out last month. Personally, I would NEVER go back to a wash machine with an agitator because bras get tangled in the agitator and it's harder on clothes, BUT, also, I did not like the front loader with the rubber seal when you opened the door because the seal gets pitted and moldy after a while UNLESS you keep the door open to let it dry out every time you wash.. The Cabrio is a top loading HE washer without an agitator. It is wonderful and if you go on Youtube, there are quite a few folks who show you how to use it--this can be helpful in deciding whether you want to buy it or not. The only complaint with it that I have is that for my clothes, I never use the High spin because it spins way to fast and can damage clothes--on the Medium though, it is great on clothes.

Just my opinion,

M.

We just got a set of LG washer and dryer. they aren't the super fancy ones but they are AWESOME. in fact LG is so good that sears canceled their contract with whirlpool who used to make the Kenmore brand and gave the deal to LG to make better washers and dryers for a lower price. I personally have issue with Whirlpool cooperation due to their horrible handling of the Maytag buyout. Whirlpool themselves have seriously cut corners and do not make a quality machine like they used to. if you have to pick between maytag or whirlpool pick Maytag. they are still made at lower quality by whirlpool but they are better then the whirlpool brand itself. make sure you look into getting money back from your energy company and from the government (ohio rebates start on March 26th) Good luck!

Check consumer reports about the various front loader models. Many had an issue with mold forming in the washer but some don't. Unfortunately my washer had this problem and I now have to leave the door open after each wash so it dries well. Other than that, I love the front loader design. Good luck.

I have Maytag Neptune washer/dryer set and I love them. I'don't have any mold issues. Just use the set wisely and clean it regularly and you don't have issues.

I've had my set over 5 yrs and I use them on a daily basis.

you might want to try cleaning out the duct from your dryer, if it gets full of lint it can make the dry time slower with nothing wrong with the actual dryer.

We bought a Whirlpool Duet 5 years ago - the warranty expired earlier this week. We've had a lot of service on it over the years. So glad we got the extended warranty. We've been asking around to see if it is wise to invest in more extensions of the warranty or getting a new one.

The advice from Sears? Most washers/dryers are built to last ~5-8 years these days. Most of what they service is front-loading, but most of what they sell is the same thing. They said things have advanced since we purchased ours, but they really couldn't make recommendations.

As for the dryer - they usually last much longer. I'd check to make sure the line from the dryer outside isn't clogged. It's easy to clean and will save you hundreds of dollars if that's the issue. We called Whirlpool once to figure out why ours wasn't working, and that was the issue. I felt like an idiot that it was that simple.

Good luck.

I would definitely look around to see if it's something that is easily fixable. I understand that they are old, but sometimes the older ones are the ones to hold on to. my parents had/have their washer and dryer from 20 years ago. It's been through a flood in the basement and all it's needed was a few smaller repairs through the year (after the flood it needed to be cleaned extensively but otherwise in good shape). Do you know anyone who is handy with such things?? ask around you might be surprised that you know someone that can help you out for cheap..

A friend of mine is in the same situation as you are, and she has done some research. I believe she has decided on the front loading Kenmore brand from Sears. She also mentioned to M. that they will be running a "Cash for Appliances" (similar to the "Cash for Clunkers" program they used for autos last year) I think she said it starts on March 1st. Look into that, as she said she will be saving over $600 on her new set by taking advantage of the program and also by getting a 20% discount for using her Sears card. Good Luck
