S., I am a 40+ mom (married 23 years) of a 7 yr old daughter with a learning disability, and it took me over five years before someone would listen to me regarding her delays. I have educated myself heavily on the internet, and have sought action. You did not mention the type of disability that she has, but my daughter had the same tantrums. She still does when she is frustrated with herself. Try to put yourself in her world. I know it's not easy, believe me, I know. There are some parenting resources that are available for your support that you may check into. They're Love and Logic, and they do have a web site, I think it's www.loveandlogic.com. Also, the one thing that has helped my daughter to channel her frustrations the most is gymnastics. There is something about this activity that stimulates the brain so that the behavior can function better. There are other activities that promote movement that will help her. I think another mom has actually recommended something on this order. Another area for you to research is www.feingold.org. They offer some great suggestions using diet, and they have awesome links. She may or may not outgrow her disability, but am thankful for the new sciences that are being developed to help everyone involved cope better without the use of harmful drugs. Most important, find a support group. They're worth gold!

First off, how old is she and what was she diagnosed with? And what made you question that she has a problem?

I don't know much about learning disorders but I also don't believe everything DRs say either. Especially when it comes to learning and behaviour disorders, I think they are too quick to jump on stuff like that.

I am not sure how old your daughter is or what she has been diagnosed with -- however, most times learning disabilitites are not something that kids outgrow - they learn coping strategies and skills to help them to be successful in school. I would be intersted to know more and maybe I can offer some additional, more specific advice. I am an elementary school teacher with a reading certification.

I am a special education teacher, and the majority of my students have learning disabilities. All this means is that there is a gap between her ability (what she is capable of doing) and her achievement (what she actually is doing). While some eventually will "catch up" most have to learn to live with them. The internet is a wonderful tool for finding information. Try www.ldonline.com. It has great ideas and articles to better understand learning disabilities and how to cope with them. Your daughter will need to develop good study skills to aid with her education. Also, teachers are required to follow any classroom modifications written into her IEP, so make sure her teachers understand what they need to do to help your child succeed. Let me know if I can be of anymore help!

S.,
How old is your daughter? Who diagnosed her learning diability?
They all outgrow the falling on the floor, screaming tantrums...but tantrums have different forms and they will show you they don't like something in many different ways! lol

Hi S.,

I only have a moment right now as I am on my way out the door to work. My son was diagnosed with Intersensory Perception Disorder at the age of five. IPD affects fine motor skills among other things. As a small child he had special tutoring and occupational therapy. He has also been on medication (NOT Ritalin!!) for problems with focus and attention span. He is currently fourteen and no longer has occupational therapy and is currently off the medication. What kind of LD does your daughter have? Many are "outgrown" (my son learned coping skills, really, as you would with dyslexia) with minor assistance. I would be glad to share anything I can with you that may help.

Hello S.,
I'm also 41 and married 23 years and I do know what you mean about marriages not lasting long. Seems you and I are in the minority and blessesd indeed. We have 4 children one of which has a learning disability as well as physical handicaps. Now as to your question ... what type of learning disability does your daughter have? How old is she and is she getting any needed serveces to help her to cope with what disability she has? My understanding of learning disabilities are depending upon the severity of each person, he/she can be taught different methods to accomplish the same task. The important thing for you to do is to empower yourself with all the information that you can. Then you will be able to make the decisions that are best for your daughter. Feel free to contact me anytime.
