My baby girl is turning a year old this month, and I want to give her a book with a letter from me in it. I'm SO not good with words and was wondering if any of you could help me out with quotes/sources for me to get ideas from. The book is The Red Shoes (here's the amazon link for it-- http://www.amazon.com/Red-Shoes-Illustrated-Ed/dp/1934429...) and I pretty much want to say that I hope she always keeps a part of me and my spirit with her as she becomes a woman. Any writers out there that want to scooch some creativity this way?!! Thanks ladies!

*I know she's only one year old, but I have a book my mom gave me on my first birthday with a letter in it and I treasure it to this day. I want it to become a tradition among the women in my family and carry it on for generations

What can I do next?

My husband and I love the words to Rod Stewarts "Forever Young" We sang it (off key and ugh!) all thru my tough pregnancy, and all the time when she was little. Now we sing it loud and horribly to her on her birthday every year...todays the day! LOL. Usually we get her in the car on the way to dinner...blast it and belt it out. She laughs at us and joins in!

Find your inspiration and let it do just that...inspire you to write whats yours! Thats what this song does for us...it inspired us to find the words to say what we wanted...and to embarass our now TODAY 17 year old! Gotta love traditions!

I love the lyrics to "I Hope You Dance" by Lee Ann Womack

"I hope you never lose your sense of wonder. May you get your fill to eat but always keep that hunger. May you never take one single breath for granted. God forbid love ever leaves you empty handed."

Its a great song too.

That's really sweet of you. Problem is, you don't want to use other peoples words to pass on through generations do you?? I will give you ideas to think about...

During the day, write down funny moments your daughter does and how they make you feel. Even if your writing is simple, it's still coming from you and your heart. Not everyone writes beautifully but everyone can write a letter that someone else reading can say, "yep, that's A.". Make sense?

When your daughter is sleeping, pick up a pen and paper and describe how she looks. Is she peaceful, does she suck in her bottom lip, does she move a lot etc....

When you are feeding her, write down her favorite foods and how clean or messy she gets or maybe how you don't like her to be messy so you keep a wet cloth nearby to wipe the smallest of food off her cheek.

When she's letting our her full personality, who does she remind you of? Is there a funny story about that person you can write down to prove it?

When taking walks, is she alert and points at everything, screaming out everything she sees or is she laid back and enjoys the ride?

The words will come out of you, just make small notes throughout the day as you think of your baby girl and before you know it, you'll have a beautiful letter straight from you, not a random stranger on Mamapedia:)

GL!

Write from your heart. She will love and treasure it because it came from YOU, not because of flowery words.

Start by just writing anything and everything that comes to mind - you might surprise yourself with what you come up with. Then, edit and start forming the letter. Take your time. It may take several drafts before you're happy with it, but you will be in the end. And your daughter will cherish *your* words.

I agree with Lesley. It doesn't matter if your words are not beautifully decorative and poetic because what really matters is that they come from YOU, your heart and soul. I wrote a letter to my unborn son as soon as I found out I was pregnant and another one the first time he moved within my belly and I felt him. The emotions were so strong, the happyness so intense, it was easy to just dscribe all the love I felt without concern for the formality of my writing. Make it unique, make it PERSONAL by just being yourself. My opinion.
