I Have a 2 Year Old Who Doesn't Talk. He Makes One Sound for Everything.

I'd like to find a Doctor to take him to. His pediatrician seems unconcerned about it even thought he has never said Mama, Dada, Bottle....nothing. His Doctor says it is because he is the youngest child but his brother 2 years older started talking early as did all of my other boys. He turned two in May. If you have a great caring Doctor anywhere in Vegas, or any other suggestions that would be helpful, please let me know. Thanks.

What can I do next?

Hi J.. I have two boys(ages 4 & 2) and I've taken them to about 3-4 different doctors because I was never satisfied with what they told me everytime I took my kids in, until I finally found Dr. Weiner. Dr. Weiner is a great pediatrition and other friends of mine think so too. He might be able to refer you to a speech specialist. Here's his info: Desert Pediatrics ###-###-####.
They've got an office at S. Eastern, W. Sunset, and N. Teneya.

I use Dr. Levin at Henderson Pediatrics. I think he is a very good doctor, and he really cares about the children. I'm sure you'd get a good response from him. The phone number is ###-###-####.

Your dr should be referring you to early interventions on S. Valley View its state funded and free for you until your child is 3 yrs. Contact them directly I don't think you need a referral. They helped my DS but they took alittle while to get him in the system. Sorry I can't find the phone number. Maybe another mother can help with that. Don't wait. Good luck.

J.: Don't worry about it. My oldest son (who is now 14)didn't start talking until he was about 2 1/2. Everything was "mama". He started talking from watching Barney of all things. He started singing that stupid "I love you, you love me" song. But what the heck, it worked. By the way, my son is very intelligent and talks up a storm. I can't keep him quiet.

Hi J.!

I'm a 28 y.o. mother of 4. I was concerned for my second son (now 4) because he didn't talk either. He would just point. Often my older son would "interpret" for him. For the longest time he wouldn't speak. Nathan would just point to something he wanted. I took him to several doctors (specialists) who said he was fine. So I had to encourage him to speak. If they have siblings speaking for them, why talk? And if we are good at guessing what they want, there's really no reason to say words. Try coaxing him to say words with rewards for his attempts. Some small little treat he enjoys, to encourage him.
Nathan eventually started talking at about three, but he is a little chatterbox now! I hope this gives you a little bit of peace of mind...

Hello Againg J... Perhaps I can return the favor and recommend someone very good, for your needs :) Since you were so kind as to share your nanny with me...

HANDS DOWN best pediatrician I've ever taken my kids to is Shazia Kirmani at the pediatric center, over near summerlin... Second bet is James Burdette, who incidentally used to practice in the same office with Shazia Kirmani, but branched out on his own..

Dr. Kirmani has a huge patient list.. People just love her and she's great at what she does, so if you really like seeing the DR. everytime you go in, instead of assistants or whatnot, go see James Burdette as he has less patients to see everyday.. He's a bit dry, but very very good. She's sweet, but you don't get to see her every time..

Anyhow.. Here are their numbers.
Dr. Shazia Kirmani
Pediatric Center
2050 Mariner Dr # 150
Las Vegas, NV 89128-6656
Phone: ###-###-####

James Burdette
he's at the SW medical center out on Nellis

J.,

My son is almost 3 and a year ago we were in a pretty similar boat. You want to call Nevada Early Intervention and get him evaluated. It is a *FREE* service and you can self refer. They will test his hearing, tell you how speech delayed he is and then start sending a developmental specialist and/or speech therapist TO YOUR HOUSE. If they offer you "twice a month" say "my pediatrician said he really should have therapy at least once a week." I didn't know that so my son got the twice a month thing and now we are paying for private speech therapy at $120 (yes, one hundred and twenty) an hour. Believe me, you want all of the free services you can get. And, for what it is worth, I have good insurance. But they don't cover speech therapy unless it is surgery or injury related (so don't be surprised if your insurance won't cover anything). Now that my son is almost 3, we are going through the evaluation process with the school district (early intervention does birth-3 and then the school district takes over at 3). He will start preschool (again free) through the school district in September after his 3rd birthday. We go for our IEP meeting Sept 7 (his birthday is Sept 11) and then we will know what his "diagnosis" is according to them and we will know what services we will be offered. They said he will likely either go to 2.5 hours of preschool 4 days a week or 6 hours of preschool, 4 days a week - depending on how delayed they think he is. During that preschool he will see a speech therapist and anyone else they thing he needs to see (likely an occupational therapist because as he's gotten older it is becoming apparent he's got some sensory issues going on). The school district buses the kids back and forth or you can take them and pick them up. If your son is in daycare, some daycares will bus...

Good luck. If you have any questions or if I can help in any way, feel free to contact me, ____@____.com can be a really daunting process.

Hi J.,

I am actually a speech therapist here in town. Tera gives good advice. You definately need to get your 2 year old in for an evaluation. As Tera indicated you can get the ball rolling on your own with Nevada Early Intervention. But, I would also insist on getting a referral from your pediatrician and consider private speech therapy also. Many of the patients I see do both since the frequency of visits with NV Early Intervention can be limited. But, as Tera also said, insurance coverage for speech therapy can be sketchy. Call your insurance company to find out for sure.

In the meantime, here are a few resources which may be of some assistance:

You may contact me at ____@____.com if you have any other questions.

Good luck!

Hi! My pediatrician is Dr. Levin from Henderson Pediatrics. He is a WONDERFUL doctor. My sister-in-law uses him for her children as well. Her daughter is 20 months and not speaking either, so he sent her to early intervention to get assessed. So, if you don't want to switch pediatricians, you can always contact early intervention (I think it's free) and they will evaluate your son. If you do want to switch doctors, Dr. Levin is listed on this sight as a recommended pediatrician and his phone # and address are there. If you need more info, let me know. Good Luck!
