i found a verry old chihuahua on my way home today and after a few convincing words the old dog let me pick him up well my boyfriend is not at all a dog person. but i could not leave this poor old guy to fend for himself. so i took him back home and sure enough me and my boyfriend had a fight. but i gave him a bath because man did he STINK! he was also very thirsty. i don't have any dog food so i fed him bolonia but he threw it all up. i have already posted on craigslis that i found him and i searched all the posts to see if anyone lost him but still nothing. i don't know what to do i cant keep him i have a 11 month old daughter as well. and just tonight my boyfriend said he wasn't even going to sleep in the same room so here i am all alone with an old dog and my baby in the crib. my boyfriend told me to take him to the humane scoity but there is no way that anyone would adopt this old boy. i'm pretty sure he most likely has some medical problems but i just cant afford to take him to the vet. what do i do? i need to find him a new place asap but how?

Hi M.. I would suggest you call Chicago Animal Care and Control. They take in lost & stray animals. I've been reading a lot about them lately, they sound like the right place for the little guy. I don't think they would take the boyfriend though! LOL!

Good luck & thank you for being a wonderful human being!!

You could call all the shelters and see if anyone reported their chihuahua missing. If they did great, if not then I would try some of the suggestions below. I lost my dog once years ago and reported it to all the shelters. I got a call 2 days later that he was found and being taken care of by a couple. They reported him to the shelter and they called me to let me know.

You sound like a terrific person. Not many folks have the courage to bring home a stinky, old dog. Your boyfriend, however, may be showing you signs of what kind of a person he really is. Many times stressors just magnify our personality traits so this may be an indication of how he handles problems in the future. If you go on the internet you could find something you can feed your little stray until you can get food. God bless you for being such a caring person.

Boy I think the bigger issue is the boyfriend. Adopt the chihuahua out and send the boyfriend to the pound! Obviously it is not his 11 month old or he wouldn't sleep elsewhere. A long and winding road ahead. Caution, Caution! Kudos to you to take in such a stray. If you stay with the boyfriend that will be the end of your loving gestures. Kick him to the curb! (not the dog). Sorry for the unsolicited boyfriend advice but people don't see the red flags until it is too late. Peace!

Personally, I'd tell the boyfriend to kiss my a$$, take the dog to the vet, and do the best you can by the little guy. It could be that he has a lot of life left in him only he's been mistreated.

Our Pomeranian became my oldest's best friend. I mean he would take fingers if anyone attempted to touch her in her bed. You had to call her, not touch her to wake her up.

My first guide dog was the same way with my youngest. If I couldn't find the kid in her crib then toddler bed (usually WITH the dog), I'd find her in the dog's bed complete with her blanket and using the guide dog's belly as her pillow. They were inseparable until the end; the same is true of the Pom we had. These dogs were my girls best friends and are a part of their best memories.

When I was an infant, I was raised with 2 Siamese cats. You know how most people claim cats are dangerous for babies? Well, the only danger about me when I was an infant when it came to these two cats was if someone other than my Grams or my mother came to the bassinet or crib. If anyone other than them came at me, the cats would attack. I have 2 uncles, and 2 aunts who literally HATED those two cats but as far as it came to me, I was snug as a bug and safe from anything because Sissy and Buttons watched over me day and night from everything and everybody until they became so old that nature took it's course and they crossed the Rainbow Bridge just as my former guide dog did and my former Pomeranian did.

The humane society should accept him. The only problem would be if your local shelter routinely puts animals to sleep. The shelter in this town pipes in classical music to the animals, for god's sake! They are better taken care of than I am!! :)

Post the dog on Craigslist, someone is probably looking for him. Tell your boyfriend he can live with a dog for two or three days. How nice of you to take care of the dog.

I don't think there is any way a chihuahua could survive our winter outside. I would think the old guy was someone's pet who got away somehow. Definitely take him to a vet or shelter and see if he has been microchipped. If not, you have some great suggestions for shelters/rescue groups to take him to. Thanks so much for being a kind hearted dog lover, despite the fact that you knew your boyfriend would be so against it. I can completely understand him not wanting to keep the dog but you're just helping it find a home...anyway, good luck!!!! :)

Dear M.,

I think you have a great heart to pick him up and care for him till you can find a new place for him.

What you should do is call all the surrounding humane societies and animal control facilities. The reason being that when a dog is lost the first place the owner will call is these places to find out if anyone has brought their dog or animal there.

Another thing you can do is take a picture of the dog and put it on a flyer describing everything about him such as: male/female, neutered / spade, color, temperment, older or a puppy, white spotted front paws and so forth. Put your name and phone number that the owner can reach you at and post it at all the grocery stores, gas stations, pharmacies that will allow you to do so in the area that you found him. Make sure you put at the top of your flyer: FOUND and then put the area that you found him in.

Good Luck I hope I helped.

I am not a dog person either, I was bit in the face at 3 years old and I was terrified of them for years, so if I just really didn't want a dog it shouldn't be an issue.

Anyway, that poor dog is lucky to have found you. He may have been dumped. We have that happen all the time out in the country. So we have to go and shoot the poor things and then dig a hole and bury it. It may sound heartless but getting picked up by a bird of prey and dropped from a high point is worse or ran over by a car and laying there is also worse. People just have no idea when they do that.

I think maybe calling around to some very local vets too. Chihuahua's are usually registered animals and may have a chip in him.

take him to the humane society they will do his medical and people like me do adopt older animals for one reason or another. I adopted a grown cat last week because she would be old enough to mouse. I didn't want a kitten cause they will be to little to mouse. if this cat doesnt mouse we will go get another adult. Yes people adopt older animals. And we have reasons for it. Older dogs are already housebroken some are trained and some just make better companions cause they don't have the hyperness of a puppy.
In alot of cases older is better. I wouldn't trade my older cat for a kitten due to mice issues. She is just a cool cat. I am very happy with my older cat even if she doesn't mouse.

... don't give up... you may find someone who is a real pet lover and will adopt an older dog.... just hope.

Your boyfriend... wow, he's cold... um, hopefully he is not so insensitive & heartless with the other 99% of his personality or with his baby or girlfriend or relationships.... he must really hate dogs to not even sleep in the same room
