Any suggestions on teaching a 4 year old how to blow his nose. He just can't seem to do it properly.

What can I do next?

Get straws and cut them in half (so they're small).

Get a glass of water.

Have his place the straw near his nostril and blow bubbles in the water.

When he needs to blow his nose, remind him of this game because that's exactly how you do it.

With some of our students we put little feathers on a tissue and held it under their nose and told them to blow the feathers off with their nose. They have to push the air through their nose to move the feathers, so it gets them used to blowing out that way and it can easily transition into blowing into a tissue.
Good luck!

I guess if you can get him to blow out from his nose, you can teach him to plug one side and blow, then plug the other side and blow. I think it's just a matter of coordination. We've got that one down...but how do you teach a six year old to whistle? :)

I taught my kids by showing them. I would do it and have them do it while I wiped. So every time they would blow I would say "now blow" and I would do it while I wiped. My daughter is 4 and she blows her own nose.

With my 4 year old we had my husband do a really comically loud, over exaggerated blow then asked our son to imitate the "daddy nose blow." Worked like a charm! Sometimes I do have to close one nostril and have him blow then do the other one.

I had a friend who said to tell them to blow out birthday candles with their nose...obviously this was not while they were on something edible :)
