How to Get 2 & 4 Year Old to Take Yucky-tasing Medicine?

My 4 and 2 year old are both sick with coughs - doesn't seem serious, but I'm having a hard time getting them to take the supposedly "yummy" medicine - I've tried mixing it with milk, hot chocolate, etc., as well as enticing them with something yummy or fun after they take it, with mixed results. My 2 year old will drink some medicine-mixed in milk from her sippy cup but then ends up leaving the rest. As I write, my 4 year old fell asleep after we both lost a battle trying to get him to drink his medicine. Sigh!! Any sage advice?

What can I do next?

if you're trying to give them cough medicine, why not switch to honey. honey has been proven a better remedy than cough syrup. 1/2 teaspoon for two to five year olds. also, you could try putting vicks on the bottom of their feet followed by a pair of socks. i do this at night so we can get some sleep!! coughing is the body's way of getting junk out of the lungs so you dont want them to not cough at all. as the other mom said, there is another post prior to yours about yucky tasting meds that has some great suggestions. good luck!

Scan a bit down the list of questions and you'll see you're not alone ... someone else asked about the same thing. Some good ideas are listed there.

Good luck!

You might check with the local pharmacists-- I've heard they can add flavorings now in the flavor your kids like, I think Target is one of the ones that will do it... you might just take the bottle and go in and ask... or even ask if they have the same thing in a flavor under their generic program for cheap? Good luck!

I know that battle well. I am not a soda drinker or fan, but when it comes to bad tasting medicine it works like a charm. My four year old son does not get soda normally, so when I offer it with meds inside (I don't mention that part) he takes it happily. I start with 7-up and if that doesn't work there is always Coke, Pepsi or Root Beer even diet with less sugar. I usually mix it with water and give a small amount to make sure he will drink it all. Good luck!

a pharmacist told my sister-in-law to mix the medicine with chocolate syrup. I haven't had to try it yet. But it is worth a shot.
