How to Find the Right College for My Daughter

While the time is somewhat off, I'd like to let you know about North Carolina School of the Arts located in Winston-Salem. They have a lot of summer programs for High school students, so it is something she could actually check out before deciding if that is the type of school she may like. Here is their website for more information. And FYI, it is only 1.5 hours from Charlotte. My grandmother worked there for years I spent alot of summers on campus envious of the students. Seemed like a fun place to me. http://www.ncarts.edu/ I went to Appalachian in Boone and have to say I still believe it is one of the best educations for the money, and they have a diverse cirriculum. I used to be a full time college admissions consultant (I now only do it part-time due to being a SAHM of a wonderful 10 month old boy). There are only 2 schools in NC (and I think none in SC) that offer architecture as a major. They are UNCC and NC State. Both programs are very competitive and very difficult to get into. If she is interested in that, she will have to have a portfolio and will have to go through an interview (if she passes the first round of "acceptance"). In that interview, she'll have to display a wide knowledge of architecture already. NC State has a complete "Design School", which I think is very good - also competitive to get into. My recommendation to parents is to have your child specialize in one thing - get very good at that. These days, colleges aren't so much looking for "well rounded" kids, but rather kids who are excellent in something. It is GOOD that you are starting now. I moved here from Pennsylvania in October 2005.

I've raised my 5 kids on my own. 2 of them are college grads...the 2 youngest are still too young (and my angelbaby is gone) :(

When my oldest started thinking about college...I really listened to her desires, interests, passions, likes and dislikes. I had always believed that if she settled for something that she doesn't really want...she won't do her best and she won't stick with it. College isn't easy. So finding the one that suits your daughter best is a wonderful thing for her and all of you.

The Art Institute of Indianapolis is a great school for anyone interested in art. They focus on every area of art including architecture, landscape and home design and many others. They also focus on academics, which is most important in our family. My brother graduated from The Art Institute of Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania) and he has a great career in graphic art in Hollywood, California designing movie posters for George Lucas movies! He has the exciting life that he wanted and he's very happy.
As far as modeling goes...there are quite a few ways to go. My daughter (back in PA) is 20 now and has been doing modeling for a few yrs. She started with a local agency (in PA). Here in Indy...try this place... http://qbnw.com/indiana/ ....from what I hear, they're good. Good luck to both of you!

The high school that my daughters attended had a "career lab", unfortuantely not all schools in our area have this. The lady that ran this helped with all types of things, scholarship opportunites based on their talents as well as their academic abilities and colleges which offered their fields of interest. I would check with your current school and she is this is offered.

Locally there is also Herron School of Art and Design. It has produced some highly recognized artist, illustrators and graphic designers. It has recently become a part of IUPUI and also offers Saturday classes for high school sudents. www.herron.iupui.edu

College is so important and the next 3 years will help determine where she goes, if she gets early acceptance her senior year. I recommend checking out some very good art schools, and picking a couple and contact them. Ask them what they are looking for in future students. What type of extracurricular activities they are wanting her to have participated in. I know experience is key and most high schools do not offer what she would need. As she gets older maybe some interships working alongside an architech and a landscape artist would be good. And definitely art school. I wish her luck as she decides, and applaud her for being mature enough to start thinking about it.

My oldest daughter is 16 and we have talked about the future as well. Our school provides tons of information on scholarships and college open houses and things. I would start with your daughters guidance counselor at school. They get and know a lot about the colleges out there especially if she has a specific career in mind. That is what I would suggest to you.

If you're willing to go out of state, I recommend SCAD, the Savannah College of Art and Design, in Savannah, Georgia. Check them out on the web and if out of state is not for you, maybe they can be a link to help you. Good luck.

WHOA!!!!! Slow down! She isn't even driving and you are pushing college on her?! Students start looking at college in their Junior year, NOT Freshman. She'll burn out before she's even close to going.
Is she in any art classes? Performing Arts? Acting? Art/music clubs? School plays? Has she ever had modeling experience? Start with the basics, see if other people think she's as good as mom and dad think she is and go from there.
U of Cincinnati has a wonderful design school (#1 in Architecture, #2 in Interior Design, #1 with employers for Fashion design) that includes co-ops (paid internships) and a great Music and Arts concservatory - when she's ready to start looking.

I attended Indiana University in Bloomington and my roommate was an art major and several of the girls I lived near were also. A few of them have graduated and have GREAT jobs doing what they love. All of the art programs at IU are AMAZING including theater! It's something to look into!

You still have a lot of time to find a good college, and your daughter may change her interests during high school. But there is a lot of information on line. Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) is a famous art and design school where she may want to look.

It doesn't matter what school system you grew up in to find the "perfect" college. I'd try doing an internet search or asking her art teacher for ideas on possible colleges. Good luck!

Hi, My daughter is a sr in college at UNCC and hopes to get into law school. My best advise I can give you is don't decide on where your daughter should go, But do have a quideline on how much you will be able to afford, even state schools are up there in the $20,000.00 range with room and board books and tuition, and that is now can't imagine what it will be like in 4 years. Talk to school counslers and college foundation of NC it has its own web site and is a great tool. Good Luck!
