How Many Diapers Will We Need?

We're planning on using cloth diapers almost exclusively. Disposable when we're out and about for long periods of time and don't want to haul around a dirty diaper. I have NO IDEA how many we should buy. I like the idea of the Bum Genius one size diapers and might get those unless I find something that looks better. Maybe a diaper service? I really don't know, but we have a while yet so any input would be appreciated.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, I can't exactly say what happened as we don't have the baby yet but you've all been a HUGE help. I have a MUCH better idea of where to go to find what is going to work for us. Thanks!!!

we have 25 and that gets us through about 2 days, which is all you want a dirty diaper to sit anyhow. BTW, cottontail babies just opened a shop in Clearwater (NE coachman & Belcher) and you can go in and see and feel all the diapers and she can tell you all about them!!

i would say at least a dozen to start. eventually 18-24 would be best in case there is a day that you cannot do laundry.

and bum genius one size are great, just be prepared that they may not fit your newborn. we used disposables for the first month b/c of the size issue w/ cloth diapers. and also b/c of the umbilical cord and circumsision. we now use cloth and, like you want, disposables when we are out or w/ a babysitter.

do your research about cloth and washing them. there are some detergents that you can use and some that you can't. dreft gave my baby horrible diaper rash and i had to 'strip' the diapers. the most convenient detergents are purex free and clear and all free and clear. here's a website that goes over it www.pinstripesandpolkadots.com

Hi, C.. I've used the BumGenius diapers for about a year now with my third baby. (We used disposables for the first two weeks.) We have absolutely loved them, although I've made due with only 12, which means I do laundry every other day. Some of the other posters have recommended as many as 50, but I think that number probably comes from the old-style cloth diapers. Ideally, I think if you can get two of the CottonBabies super-saver packs (or whatever they're called), giving you 24 diapers, you'll be very happy. Their customer support is great, by the way. Just make sure you get diaper doublers, too. They really add to the absorbancy. Good luck and congratulations! J.

Hi Erin,
After trying many different cloth diapers I came to the conclusion that Thirsties all-in-one cloth diapers were the best. Here is some info on how many http://www.diaperdiggs.com/howmany.html
I found that the one size diapers don't work well for all babies. What ever brand or type you choose, I recommend you try one before ordering alot.

I am about to have my second child in March & have decided to use cloth this time around. I have been doing research for the past month & have found www.diaperpin.com to be one of the most valuable resources. It breaks down all the different types of cloth diapers. I have decided to go with about 18 pocket diapers. They will mostly be the BumGenius one size; the newer version is supposed to be great even for newborns & BF poopy explosions. I am trying a couple Haute one size, & Fuzzi Bunz (but the FB require add'l purchases b/c of sizes). Diaperpin also has customer reviews on the different types/brands of diapers & the various stores/websites to purchase from. You'll also have to consider a storage bag/pail liner, diaper liners, etc. Also, after reading one woman's review I decided to go with cloth wipes too, b/c she said separating out the disposable wipes from the cloth diapers after a diaper change was an extra step. This makes sense to me. I am purchasing from www.softclothbunz.com b/c when you join their mailing list you get 10% off you first purchase. Hope this helps. Good luck.

I used cloth for my second child and had approx 3 dozen. I used a diaper pail and placed them in some bleach water until they were washed.

I cloth diaper my 2 year old and you need about 50 cloth diapers. If they sell by the dozen then just get 48 and call it good. I would call the ped you want and ask how many wet diapers in a day a baby is supposed to have and then multiply by how often you want to do laundry...

My youngest is seven ,so I'm not sure which ones we bought, I belive mostly from walmart and sears and the prefolded ones and ones with velcro were the best.Good luck , Enjoy

First off good for you for choosing to use cloth! More people should do it. I'm not sure where you live but I know it's hard to find a service in most parts of Florida. (let me know if you find one) If you can find a service that's THE way to go. They drop off clean diapers and pick up the dirty ones. I know when my daughter was a newborn the service delivered 36 - 45 diapers per week. Some weeks we had a couple of extra and some weeks I had to wash a few which was no big deal. They charged and delivered based on how many diapers were returned. A friend who chose to use disposables and I compared costs from month to month and the cloth were the same to cheaper to use then the disposables when using the service. Plus think of the environment ;-)
Best of luck!

At first you need about 10-15 a day. Consider poopy ones with every feeding which is about every two hours and probably a wet in between. But there are always the two poopers per feeding its always more if breastfeeding. I know times have changed but my mother in law used a diaper service years ago and said that the detergents they used were to harsh so somethin to consider and if you are washing yourself always remember rinse twice.
