How Can I Keep My House Smelling Fresh?

I love the way a clean house smells! Aside from cleaning every single day, does anyone have any great tips on how to keep your house smelling fresh between cleanings? I'm not big on candles, and have been using Plug-Ins but am ready to try something new. I don't like things that smell overly sweet and perfumey - just fresh and clean. The last time we had our air ducts cleaned, they disinfected with something that kept the house smelling fresh for quite a while. Anyone have any ideas how to do that on your own? I would love your suggestions!

I use Odoban and get the concentrate from Sam's Club by the gallon. I put it in the spray bottle as recommended and spray it everywhere. I like the scent and it's cheap.

I've also used the fabric softener with the Febreeze bottle before using Odoban and it's a great alternative on the cheap.

I'm not a plug-in person since after a week - I can't smell them anymore and they are expensive over time.

I like the dryer sheets in the vents... good one!

I'm not a big fan of artificial air fresheners spray or plug ins. I just keep the garbage cans emptied, toilets sparkling, floors clean, windows opened every day and boil some water with cinnamon on the stove. The sprays can irritate respiratory systems so avoid them!

I am fussy about how my furniture smells, so one thing I love to do is get a safe fabric softener and mix it with purified water and I spray it on my furniture liberally and it keeps my house smelling great.( I order mine from melaleuca, and love it) Also can be sprayed on curtains and other things in the house. Make sure to buy one you really like the smell of, mine has just a fresh linen smell to it. I have never had a problem with it staining anything, but if you had doubts you could try it on something you don't care about as much.

I don't like the idea of using scents for a cover up, but I do like to use things that smell good for cleaning. Lemon oil on wooden furniture is great for the wood and smells great elsewhere.

You can get charcoal air fresheners at home depot for the stinky spots -- under sinks etc.

You can use orange peels to freshen the dish disposal. Put the orange peel in there and turn it on. A nice orange fragrance lasts for a while. You can also put the orange peels in the the liner of the trash can to help with that odor. You can mix orange oil and water in a spray bottle and mist different areas of the house to make it smell as though you just cleaned. I find that citrus scents give me the "clean" feeling. You can also tuck strong smelling dryer sheets into inconspicuous areas, I like to hide these in my car, just as good as any air freshener.

have you tried the carpet fresheners? they're just a dollar or two, and you sprinkle the carpet with them, then wait a few minutes, and it vacuums right up. i use a mixture of those, candles, febreeze, opening the windows up (we get a great cross breeze)...

You pinged on one already... the air vents:

- Dryer sheets in the airvents & or air filter
- Essential oils in the vents

Others:

- Fresh cut flowers in the house (lilacs, jasmine, mimosa, hyacinth, magnolia, lilly, sunflowers, lavender, the list goes on)

- Potted Plants (plants naturally filter the air and add oxygen)

- Cinnamon "galaxies" (turn a burner on high and wait until red hot. sprinkle cinnamon on the burner to watch galaxy like displays. The cinnamon smoke smells fantastic, and the cinnamon burns clean leaving a light, non-stick ash

- Cleaning the "usual suspects" first. Kitchen, bathroom, dog, & laundry.

- Beeswax. Just remelt and repour it from time to time. You can buy a big ole' block of it at a craft store for about $20. Lasts for years. Just melt it and pour it into jelly jars. :) You can even add a wick if you like, but little beeswax pots will scent a room with no other help needed.

Well S....... I hate Febreeze, Scentsy gives me a headache and Sol-U-Mel just plain reeks, SO.......now I have an air purifier and use grape fruit essential oil to keep my house smelling fresh.
I buy the Aura Cacia brand at www.vitacost.com

I put essential oils in my laundry, clean my house with it, put it in warm water just as a general air freshener, put them in my bath.......the list goes on. And it's so cheap it's rediculous!

Great suggestions, I would also say lots of plants, and open windows. As most of the germs we get sick from are airborne, that is the number one way to clean your house.

I use sented oils and with 2 kids in diapers are a trash can that fills up quick with them, I would try anything to make the house smell better. I bought the oil holder (the one where you light a candle) and they have a variaty of sents... I use them about once a day everything from vanilla to ocean breaze and fresh cotton. I love the way they smell and you can change it up so they aren't so sweet. I also use a walmart spray from the candle area in our room and in the bathrooms... Those seem to work for me and well when my daughter took her diaper off at night I ripped the sheets off and put them in my daughters bathroom till I got home (I was gone all day adn didn't want to come home to a bad smelling house and was running late already) the bathroom smelt horrible! I sprayed the bathroom and it worked so quick and smelt great all night! The next morning (I washed the sheets that night) the bathroom still smelt good! Also I leave my windows open when its nice outside and have a million plants in my house lol! Hope something works! Good luck :)

Febreeze, which I love the smell of. You can spray it on the couches, rugs, chairs, carpet and there is no mess or changing of sprays, plug-ins, etc. I have never took count of how many days it last though.

I have found a great locally made soap company, their soaps smell divine. I bought one bar and it is making my whole house smell lovely, and it is great for your hands. They sell at the Coppell Farmers Market and at the Dallas Farmers Market.

For Christmas my sister-in-law got a Scentsy warmer for my house and I absolutely love it, it really makes the entire house smell nice. I also use those bags with all of the good smelly stuff in them (not sure of the name), I get mine at Kirklands. When I get a new vacuum bag I empty one of the smelly envelopes on the floor and vacuum the stuff up, then every time I vacuum my house smells clean =)

I have also heard that you can pour some Pine-Sol in a cup and put it under a table somewhere inconspicuous and that your house will always smell like it was just mopped and cleaned, but I have never tried that one!

SOL-U-MEL is a miracle cleaner. It can be mixed with water and sprayed on as an air freshener and odor remover. I spray it on our carpet to get out dog accidents. Its also a stain remover if used in its concentrated form. But I freshen up the house by spraying our mattresses, pillows, couch, carpet, etc and the house is fresh and clean!

I love my scentsy it comes in all different smells from the crisp clean smells to hundreds of other smells. You can find a representitive somewhere and host a party that way you can get a % off your products and you get a chance to sample the smells. I'm not a rep I just love their product. I have a plug in one downstairs that works well and im going to get one for upstairs along with my fav scents here shortly. They are great, and they also collect the little summer bugs that make it inside
