Is it preferable to simply tackle the basic issues for malodor (dirty dishes, clothes, mold etc) or cover it up with scented candles and fresheners. Have you ever lit a pecan pie candle when guest arrive but not have it on the menu. Did it leave guests wanting to eat the pie?

What can I do next?

Tackle the issues.

Scented candles used to cover up odors is pretty much the same as putting on extra deodorant because one hasn't showered in days. People always know.

Light the candle to accent the clean house.

To me, there is nothing more "home" than a clean house with a few candles burning. One of my favorites is an apple spice, and my 2.5 yr old will say, "I smell apple crisp in my nose!" and then go looking for it! Dirty smelling house plus candles is not a good combo for me. I don't like trying to mask odors, just get rid of them!

Yes to preferable.
No to cover up.
Chemical companies have created a desire for artificial fragrances
in our homes . . . another waste of limited available funds.
Use the money instead to buy fresh fruit.
Cut up a lemon and put it in a saucer in the diningroom.

Clean. I'm not a big fan of the scented stuff - and the fresheners are not really good for you. Candles are nice and set a nice scene. But if the problem is the stuff that smells, get rid of it. I think fresh and clean always smells better than fake scents.

I don't think you can really cover up bad smells with candles or scented air fresheners. To me, it would smell like mold AND candles.
