Hi all! I have been preparing my daughter's food, but I am not sure how long I can keep the food in the refrigerator. I have just introduced her to solids, so she is still on the plan carrots, potatoes, squash and fruits. Also, can I freeze those, or this will be pointless, since freezing food reduces the nutrients? Thanks for the inputs.

Avocado is awesome! leave it on the counter till it gets tender then pop it in the fridge and it will last at least a week. I cut pieces off, mash it with a fork and it is ready to serve. Wrap the rest of the avocado in saran wrap and it will still keep for a week in the fridge...and they are so good for you.

Hope this helps.

If you blanch the foods first (before it is mashed up) than freezing doesn't take too many nutrients away. Freezing the food for about 4 months is recommended in my freezer meal book for normal freezers. You just need to make sure you get all the air out to preserve freshness. Except potatoes tend to not freeze very well. Also, as you probabl;y know, don't refreeze thawed food, and don't freeze food that has been eaten out of, b/c bacteria will grow.

I have a really good baby foods book that I got at the Healthy Approach store that I think addresses this. Unfortunatley, I can't find it right now, but here it is:

I hear these are good as well:

Just remember, if you mix ANYTHING with breast milk, it cuts the allowable time you can keep it frozen...

I also recommend the book, Super Baby Foods. It goes into how to freeze the foods in an ice cube tray. It's actually sooo easy and makes it so you're not making food every day. She goes into detail regarding nutrients too and it's ok to freeze. You do want to use organic and avoid making baby food with certain veggies (carrots due to nitrate content). I highly recommend the book for any mom who is making their own baby food.
