Holistic Remedies for Migraines and Allergies

I'm looking to get some advice on holistic remedies for migraines and allergies. I have blinding migraines at least once a month (down from once a week several months ago) that keeps me out of work. I'm thinking they might have something to do with allergies as I'm allergic to most animal dander/hair and seasonal grasses.

I'd rather take a holistic approach rather than be doped up as I have a full-time job, about to start school and have an at-home business. Any advice?

P.S. Please...please....no spam. I hate spam. I won't call and be on a conference call for "all-natural" products that are very expensive. I have 2 friends who are involved with that marketing plan and, if I need any products, I buy from them so there will be no long distance calls at my expense. Thanks anyway.

The honey trick I've heard of. Hard to find anyone in the area who sells locally harvested honey but that's definitely worth a try.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I want to thank everyone for their input (even the spammers).

I went to the doctor and was placed on Imatrix for a while for the migraines. After a spinal xray, it's discovered I have 2 vertebrae fusing in my neck. Hurts like all get out but it's something I'll have to live with. I'm impressed by Kennestone's x-ray department - they actually gave me a CD of my x-rays so I'll be taking them to a chiropractor soon (yes, I did discuss this with my doctor). I also have a few meds for the allergies and Ambien to help me sleep. I've discussed in great detail the med interactions with my wonderful pharmacist (Walgreens at the corner of Chastain and Hwy 5) so I'm sure when to take what and with what other meds.

I will be getting a second opinion on the x-rays from a more specialized doctor in the coming months. I want to make absolutely sure that nothing can be done before I implement the alternative treatment options.

If you'd like to continue to PM me about this issue, I'd be glad of the company :)

I too have started suffering from migraines. I didn't want to be taking medication either. I started seeing a chiropractor, really watching my caffiene intact, and stopped taking my birth control pill. I have also started seeing a homeopathic doctor.
I would be more than happy to share with you her name, just get back with me.
Good luck.

I used to have migraines just like you and I discovered that I had food allergies that I wasn't aware of, like sulfites. Once that was established I got rid of them almost completely. Also I thought I had only allergies but my doctor after testing told me it was basically a mild asthma and that wasn't helping with the migraines. For years I had a homeopathic treatment that worked wonders. These pills were given to me for 2 months and I didn't have to worry for the rest of the year. When I moved and lost that doctor for the following three years I had no migraines or allergic reactions even though I wasn't taken the medication. I really don't know a homeopathic doctor here in GA, I'm looking for somebody and If I find one I will let you know. My migraines have now returned with premenopause and I need to take care of them again. If you find somebody let me know as well. Good luck!

I have had migraines for a few years, and I know they can also be linked to hormones. Mine started heavily when I began infertility treatments, and although I still have them occasionally, they haven't been nearly as bad since I had my baby. I'm sure seasonal allergies definitely add to them, also. I don't really have any holistic remedies, but I wanted to pass on the hormone tie in information to you.
Good luck - I feel your pain!

S. T,

I used to have migraines like crazy. They could not figure out the source of them. My aunt who only uses herbal approach advised me to use liquid chloraphile. You can get it at most health food stores. It is good for allergies as I am allergic to almost all things that I eat and touch. The chloraphile you an take alone or mix in a fruit juice. But it helped my allergies completly and I only get mild headaches that I can now treat with regular over the counter medicines. So you might want to give it a try.

As far as holistic goes, why don't you look into a homeopath (a doctor of homeopathic medicine). I don't know where you live or I'd help you find one. But, I'm sure you could google it or Yellow Pages... Also, there's Yoga, accupressure, accupucture, massage... If homeopathic doesn't work, you could try Topamax. It's a profylactic and a wonderful side effect is weight loss. In fact, some women take it for the weight loss side effect and not the headaches.

I don't know about what you can take. But with migrains, I would highly reccomend going to your DR first to figure out why you are having them in the first place. I used to get them at one place I worked cause of a white noise machine. Sometimes bright, white light will trigger one for me. You also need to figure out what your on coming signs are too. Mine is blurry vision for about 15 mins before the pain kicks in. But it could be from a medical condition too so better to be safe than sorry.

Good luck!!

This may sound S. but, My mother swears it works and I don't know if it is psychological or what but I think it works for me too. Buy some honey that is made in your area. It has been said that consuming honey that is made from bees that use pollen in your area will reduce your seasonal allergies. As far as the pet dander goes... good luck haven't heard anything regarding holistic remedies on that.
However, my son use to snore like a beast and had allergy induced asthma. I happened upon a job as a receptionist for a chiropractor that also practiced acupuncture and acupressure. He adjusted my son twice monthly and he is breathing better, has less asthmatic episode (though they were never very severe) but the main thing is NO MORE SNORING!!! I was so impressed I started seeing him for my neck and shoulder pain that caused severe tension migraines... instant relief. Hope this gives you a few options. A chiropractor that specializes in acupuncture may have more info for you as far as holistic or homeopathic treatments go.

I am so sorry you are suffering from migraines. I have had them since I was 16 (I am now 36). Are you sure they are not hormonal? I believe that research has showed that many women get them due to hormones. I have them either during ovulation or my period. I would suggest you track them to see if they correspond with your menstral cycle. As to remedies, I know a few people who have had luck controlling them by going to the chiropractor. Also, I have read that you should avoid red wine. I don't know any other good suggestions. I take medication for mine. Good luck.

Hi S.,

Boy, I feel for you. My husband used to have the most awful migraines. He even had a grand mal seizure when we first got married. He still has one occasionally but we have 2 holistic remedies and a non-holistic remedy. I do believe that cluster headaches have a trigger and I think my husband has multiple triggers, thus the different remedies.

First of all, I keep him on the Melaleuca brand of vitamins that truly absorb along with Provex CV. Provex CV is an antioxidant blend that works to restore elasticity to your vascular system and remove plaque. It is a patented formula that not only is natural but was written up in the AMA Journal 8 times and was featured on Dateline NBC as cutting edge research and development. This has primarily PREVENTED the migraines.

If he does get one the holistic formula we have found is
1 Feverfew capsule
1 Ginkgo Biloba
2 Ginger capsules
1 B12 capsule
taken with 1 teaspoon of Magnesium Citrate (Natural Calm).

He is a large man (6'7") and I usually double the recipe on the first dose. If he still has the migraine within the next hour, I repeat it.

OK, if that doesn't work and sometimes migraines are ornery, I give him two Excedrin Migraine tablets and 1 teaspoon of Children's liquid Benadryl that has the dye in it.(Cherry or Bubble Gum; he HATES it!) The one without the dye does not work and the tablets and capsules don't work either. This will knock the headache out within 15 minutes for him. (I'm sure it has nothing to do with the Benadryl but one of the dangerous additives that is in it. I hate giving it to him but it isn't often.) If we are out of town and can't get to our other stuff, the local drugstore always has this.

We have traveled a long road with this and I know it affects your employment just as it did his...We are self employed and it has worked best for us because of his headaches.

I hope this helps you. Please let me know if you want to talk further. There may be some triggers you can remove from your life.

Regards,

M.

P.S. I ditto the chiropractic also.

There is an amazing holistic remedy called Migracin that I used to get at Wholefoods Market. It is wonderful! Also, I would think that you are having hormonal problems causing frequent migraines. I used to get them once a month before I had my daughter 4 years ago. I realized that it was part of my PSM. I was having a reaction to my BC pills. I agree with the other Momma who said to go see your Dr. You don't want to mess with head health. I hope this helps. Take care!

I used to suffer from migraines intensely until I changed my diet. I have to be very careful about eating anything with MSG (monosodium glutamate) and overindulging in chocolate or alcohol. It will do me in every time. You might want to cut out those foods and check into others that are known to be triggers for migraines. Good luck.

Hi,
It could be environmental allergies but it may be food allergies or even some type of metal toxicity.
My daughter suffered from alopecia, headaches and nervousness and extreme nail biting approx 18 months ago. After several dr's visits, topical meds and steroid injections, we used natural methods. She now has a hair full of hair and all other issues disappeared. She had a high level of lead toxicity. Once we cleaned up her diet and started homeopathic supplements, we saw results in a week or two. We still get her tested for food allergies and toxicity every few months.
The info is can be found at:

I started getting migraines in middle school & I haven't found any clear cut solutions, but things that tend to work for me are:
Drink tons of water
SLEEP and lots of it
Limit my sugar intake & no caffeine or alcohol
Chiropractor works wonders

As far as allergies, I have them too & as of yet I have only been able to control the food allergies. I still have to take medicine when it gets really bad...

I have tried it all - diet changes, honey, allergy meds, chiropractic. The two things I discovered are as someone else said, by tracking mine - they are hormonal and a special pillow for my neck helps ease them. My management use to be 2 Alleve at the first sign of pain, but now I have stomach ulcer so no more of that. I just try to do the quiet rest with cold compress - not easy to do with 2 children under 7. I think the pillow has helped the chiropractic adjustments last. I am using the D-core pillow from Core Products, but there are tons like it. D-core can be used for back or side sleepers. It positions your head correctly for keeping the spine in-line. It was a little difficult to adjust to using it, but it makes a big difference. I got mine at the chiropractor, but they sell online. Please let me know if you find something else that works especially for allergies - I am on 4 different meds everyday. I tried all things natural and after having a mild anaphlactic response to poinsettias carry an epi-pen for the possibility of my latex allergy progressing. But, I would like to control the rest of it with something less aggressive. Raw local honey did not help me or my children, but its hard to tell unless you can control all other factors.

Hi S.,
Congratulations on creating what sounds like a such a loving and full life!
Want I can do is first share what has worked very well for me over the last 10 years and invite you to explore a natural, non-chemical preventative approach to your health. I don't know anyone who can function well with pain. I was a very busy mom of 3 with my own business, struggling with back and hip pain. I will not attempt to go into great detail in this email because it would not be the best way to educate you. I will tell you that my work, outside of raising my 3 teen-aged daughters, is as a Wellness Consultant with the largest wellness company in the world. I would be happy to provide you resources to the wellness products and technologies I work with.
Feel free to give me a call ###-###-#### or send me a reply email if you would like additional information.

You've got many answers most of them referring you to holistic or CAM (complementary alternative medicine) therapies..... I don't know your city but check for a center near you that use a healing modality your are comfortable with.... As for herbs, I would suggest only using certified organic and preparing your own....it is far less expensive than buying standardized capsules...for less than $12 you can buy a year's supply of most certified herbs and prepare your own... The modality I use is Reiki My sister had migraines for decades, she now either goes for a treatment or relieves the pain herself. Good Luck, M.
