I recently recived a letter from my 6 year old sons school saying that there had been two staph infections confirmed. The letter went on to state (not word for word) not to worry the school was taking care of it. I called my family doctor and was told that my child could not be checked for it unless he had an outbreak. I am worried even though I have spoken to a doctor and looked up information on the internet. I was wondering if any other moms had gotten the same letter and what their reactions are.
The infections are probably impetigo contagiosum, in case you want to google it. Your son's best bet is to wash his hands as many times a day at school as possible, or give him some antibacterial hand liquid stuff to use. Also, I'd make sure he takes a bath every evening, just in case.
Is this at a school on Hwy. 5? I heard about a notice going out at that elementary school as well.
There has to be contact with the infected child in order to catch it most of the time. Make sure to check his buttocks for bumps that look like ant bites. Usually with children the infection works its way out in that area. My neice and a nephew had it and as long as it is detected early there is really nothing to worry about. They are put on antibiotics and really do not suffer any.
Hi, I read your letter and I have actually had staph 3 different times. My husband had it once as well. I am telling you it is so painful and hard to get rid of, it is VERY contagious I was sick from it for about a week and ran a fever it almost looked like I had an ingrown hair. I would just keep a look out, but your doctor is right, there is nothing you can do to prevent it unless you have it. I hope your child dosent get it good luck!

The Sumner County Middle School, where my 13-year-old attends, had a few cases earlier in the year. We received an information letter. It has now all blown over. As a side note and hopefully some comfort for you...I have a 16-year-old with a disabling case of Atopic Dermatitis, who is treated by a team of physicians at Vanderbilt Childrens Hosp. He has had several cases of Staph, when this occurs the doctors treat him very aggressively because of the inherent danger of his illness. However, none of the other 4 members of our family have ever had a problem. Good hygiene and resonable care keep it from spreading. Try not to worry...perhaps you can get some pocket-size kid-style hand sanitizer, they have it at Dollar General store, and send it to school with your son.

Yes, my son school handed those out but only to let us no that there had been an outbreak in the county not that it was in our school,, but this was a big deal to me seeing how my son is very contagios to this , he has leukemia and he would be able to pick this up quick,, i wa sterrified of this for him but i contacted the school and they said , it had not been detected in my sons school. But they are aware of those kids that are resptibly to these problems . I wouldnt be to concerened onless your child has a low ummnune system or has health issues.. but i dont blame u for worrying because i think just like us that most parents freaked out
ALWAYS use anti-bacterial soap- like Dial. I have had a staph infection before and they are DISGUSTING and more painful than you could imagine. You don't want your baby to get one.
I started to get another one a year or so later and as soon as I saw it forming I washed it several times a day with dial and it went away.
