As long as you realize that when you decide to sell this home you are going to have to replace all these wood cabinets with new ones, even the ones you leave their natural state, then you can do pretty much what ever you want.
I have never come across anyone who didn't want their cabinets to match so you'll have to buy all new ones for the entire house to keep the value of your home up there.
My sister, when she sold her house before the one she lives in now, went through and painted her entire house. Every wall was repainted a pretty and neutral color, I think it was harvest white or something like that. Not pure white and not beige. Then she went and bought all new border for each room and proceeded to put it up. The Realtor came in and told her to take all the border down and to paint the walls, they needed to be beige. My sister said no, I just did the walls. The Realtor told her she had depreciated her home value by at least $6000-$8000 by adding the border and by choosing a paint that was not a beige she wasted all that time and effort.
So my sister told her no, that anyone with any taste would like what she had done, they didn't sell their house for nearly 6 months. It sold in a couple of weeks once she went in and removed the borders. She touched up the paint where it had been but the border was completely removed. They got less than they were asking since it had been on the market so long but she learned a valuable lesson. When you make changes to your home you cannot expect those looking at it in a "what's it worth" sort of way to like or appreciate anything you've done to it and they'll discount the value due to your choices.
That said. There are plenty of sites you can go to that will help you decide what you'd like to do. If you google kitchen remodeling or cabinets you'll get a bunch of sites that are very good for planning out the layout all the way to what sorts of cabinet doors you'd like.
I think watching shows like Love it or List it, the twins 2 shows where they do a remodel of a home then surprise the home owner or the one where they do 2 homes at once. Then there are all kinds of shows on HGTV.
Your public library will have a section on home remodeling and decorating too. You can sit there and thumb through a few of them to see if they are modern enough for your tastes or too old fashioned. A lot of the time I see the books from the 80's. Those need to be put in a different section. Lowes and other home improvement/builders stores have sections too with remodeling books you can buy but I find them to be a bit pricey for my tastes especially when I can go check out the same book or something very near at the library.
