HELP! My 9.5 Month Old Won't Breastfeed or Take Formula During the Daytime!!!

My DD is 9.5 months old and has just started this past week to stop breastfeeding at her 10am, 2pm and 5pm feedings. She breastfeeds well in the morning (7am), although sometimes only on one side AND she breastfeeds for 25 to 30 minutes at 7:30pm for bedtime. I have been pumping during the day and giving the breastmilk or formula to her in a sippy cup (she never took a bottle). She sometimes will drink an ounce of it and others nothing. If I give her water she will drink it (from a sippy cup), if I give her half juice/half water she will also drink it. As far as solids go, she will only eat baby food from a spoon if she has something to feed herself too (ie beans, carrots, toast) She does well with the 2nd foods mixed with rice but seems to hate the 3rd foods. I tried yogurt and she doesn't open her mouth for that. She loves macaroni, spaghetti etc. but I don't know if she is eating enough because so much of it is in her lap or on the floor! I am a nervous mommy right now and don't know what to do. I hate pumping and watching her not drink it and having to dump it. Same thing with formula, I cringe making it and seeing her not drinking it and then watching money go down the drain. What do I do? The doctor mentioned she should be drinking 18 to 22 ounces a day, she probably isn't drinking more than 10 oz. (who knows with breastfeeding). Her weight is at 14% and her height is at 85%. The doctor isn't concerned about the weight because her curve is smooth but isn't that low! ANY advice would be appreciated. FYI my son never gave up breastfeeding on his own and never had issues with eating so I am at a loss with the 2nd child. As far as if it is teething, she has 8 teeth already so I don't think it is that. She acts normal and is way more active than I remember my son being, she just wants to go go go and do everything for herself! Thanks!

What can I do next?

J.,
If your doctor isn't to worried then I would be either. Just keep giving her the options. Is she having enough wet and dirty diapers? That is a big factor if she's eating enough. I noticed when my youngest 2 years old, when he was around 6-7 months old, he really wanted to eat the foods we were. I am still breastfeeding, he won't give that up as much as I wish he would. Maybe also having an older sibling she's watching and wanting to be like. My older two are 13 and 11, my daughter the oldest. Her younger brother (11 now) has always looked up to her, he started walking at 7 1/2 months, and I know it's because he wanted to follow and be like her. Maybe your daughter wants to be like her big brother.
I hope all turns out fine, I know what you mean about dumping out pump milk, it use to drive me crazy when my husband, (stayed at home with our baby) would pour out my milk because he wasn't drinking that much.
Good luck!

She may be wanting to wean herself from BF'ing. My DD went through that as well, but not until she was a little closer to a year old. They just start to get so active at that age and they are so interested in everything that is going on around them. Have you tried BF her in dark room during the day with no noise?
Also, as far as the sippy cups go, I know my DD was extremely picky about the cups we used for milk and the others for juice and water. She will not take her milk out of the same cup she uses for milk and water. I use the Nuby sippy cups with the silicone spout for her milk and any type of sippy with a plastic spout for her juice/water. This was the only way I could get her completely off the bottle. Hope this helps and good luck.

I think that if she gets hungry enough, she's going to eat. So if she's not eating as much formula, than maybe she's just not really hungry.

My 6 month old will eat good in the morning and in the evening, but throughout the day he really doesn't eat a whole lot of formula.

Also, you can freeze your breastmilk for a while so you aren't wasting it. Google it and it'll tell you how long you can keep it frozen. If it's in a deep freezer you can keep it frozen up to 6 months.

Just a thought, but she might be overeating solid foods. Cut back on the solids and she should be hungry enough to nurse.

You almost described my daughter perfectly (She has an older brother, too). We had her 9 month check-up today and she is 15 lbs (3%), 25 inches (5%), and active as all get out. You can't slow her down, and she hates to miss anything. Boys are more stomach oriented than girls. Remember the way to a man's heart?

My daughter is starting to talk and is almost walking. The doctor is not worried, so I'm not going to worry until I see a change in her activity level or bright intelligent eyes. They get more food into them than you think. Just keep nursing when she will and everything will be ok. Give her a few weeks and her eating patterns will change again. Some days my daughter eats next to nothing and others she clears her plate and still wants more.

Breastfed babies are usually smaller in the weight arena anyway so I wouldnt worry. She seems to be eating well.

Is ther ea possibility that you are pregnant? Pregnancy changes the taste of BM and some nurslings will wean themselves rather quickly because of it.

I have a friend that BF #1 for almost 3 years, #2 for 16 mo who weaned herself and is currently nursing a 6 week old newbie so they are all different.
